How often do we hear phrases like: feelings don’t make sense. Feelings are irrational. You can’t trust your feelings.

It often doesn’t make sense to feel angry when we get support or feel pain when we are happy, but the reality is that our feelings always make sense. Maybe initially, at face value they don’t, or it’s confusing to understand, but our feelings are always telling a complex story about our life and history. The feelings we don’t experience — the ones that get shut down, cut off, or covered with anxiety — we can never understand. So the question is, will you experience yours?

The core conflict from which all other psychological structures are built. This conflict, loving and hating, creates complex internal and relational systems that often lead to the distress in our lives. How can I be close, when I’ve been hurt? How can I protect my loved ones from my aggression? I must be the problem if they treat me this way.

We find many creative ways to deal with this conflict, and yet it leaves us paying the ultimate price. Intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy is a beautiful psychotherapy that allows patients to become at peace with this conflict. By processing through our unresolved and extremely complex feelings, we are able to hold the truth of our love and hate and alleviate ourselves of the conflict it once created.

An insight, an interpretation or a link, is much more meaningful when it comes from the patient. The therapist’s interpretation or analysis, even when it’s meaningful, will not resonate and integrate in the same way as the patient arriving to it on their own. It can be hard to be patient as a therapist, but it pays to trust in the patient and the unconscious process.

Great to hear on the Reclaim podcast! Yay for ISTDP. This quote speaks beautifully to the creation of defensive structures born from our attachment history, and also clarifies the therapeutic task: to update those structures! So many of us land in therapy trying to change old internal structures that historically kept us connected. We need to updated those structures to be free to attach and connect authentically.

A quick google search will tell you that peonies are a sign of good luck, warmth, and new beginnings. An appropriate flower for my first day back in the office after a nice long maternity leave. Hopefully the countless diaper changes, nighttime feedings, hours of tummy time, toddler baby walks, park visits, cleaning toddler messes and baby spit ups, will somehow translate into psychotherapy skills 🤞. Excited to be back and see my lovely patients! Thank you to for holding down the fort and welcoming me back :).

A simple yet profound message. What we do not heal, we repeat.

Early on, Frued observed the repetition compulsion. Meaning that the trauma and painful experiences that go ignored or unfaced, get acted out through repetitive patterns in our lives. These patterns can be personal behaviors that we return to in order to avoid our own internal experience or they can be relational behaviors that get acted out interpersonally. Regardless, the repetition of behaviors and patterns as a way to avoid unresolved feelings, guarantees that we continue to put pain in our lives. It is only through facing the original pain, that we can be free of our painful repetitions.

The patterns that emerge in therapy - what one feels and experiences with the therapist - is an unfolding of the past. It shines a light on the historical wounds, modes of protection and deep relational fears that many of us carry. Pay attention to the transference, it will bring much to light 💡.

You can count on Jon Frederickson to say something lovely, even if it's about anxiety.

Anxiety shows us our own history of emotional danger. It is a signal to us that certain feelings are unsafe, or have historically been unsafe. Therapy offers the opportunity to pay attention to our anxiety and learn to feel safe with all that is inside us.

It's the most wonderful time of year to read Erich Fromm's the art of loving and to give that which is alive in oneself. I have a one year old who is really good at this, he gives me all the expressions of that which is alive in him. The unfortunate reality is that many of us learn to turn ourselves off in relationships, to disconnect from our own aliveness, detach from our precios feelings and experiences. Of course this makes us lonely because it deadens our relationships. The good news is that which is shut off, can always be turned back on.

Work on keeping yourselves fully alive this holiday season so you can give the greatest of gifts. Ho Ho Ho.
