Day 12: Be the Impact

As 2025 comes to a close, weโ€™re reflecting on the incredible progress our community has made toward greater access and independence.

This year, state funding cuts have created a significant gap โ€” but your support keeps vital services moving forward. When you give, you directly support people with disabilities, families, veterans, and youth pursuing independence.

๐ŸŽฅ Hear their stories in our 2025 Impact Video below โ€” and if youโ€™re able, consider making a gift today at www.dakc.us/donate to help continue this essential work.

Together, we can keep building a community where access and independence are a reality for all. Thank you for being the impact! ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ“ From Daveโ€™s Desk โ€“ Episode 11

Hey folks โ€” and happy Christmas Eve from Daveโ€™s Desk! As we head into the holidays, we hope you and your family, friends, and loved ones are able to spend this season in the way that feels right for you. ๐Ÿค
Today, Dave is taking a moment to look back on the year and share some highlights from our work together:

โœจ Working alongside people with disabilities โ€” including helping youth prepare for adult roles and greater independence. Recently, we hosted mock interviews at our offices with 50 youth participants and 60 employee volunteers.

๐Ÿ  Safer homes โ€” last fiscal year, our Home Access team completed 458 home assessments, helping families make recommendations for safety and accessibility.

๐Ÿ“‹ Navigating benefits and systems โ€” our Benefits Team has been busy assisting people with finding and applying for benefits, housing resources, and navigating complex systems.

๐Ÿฅซ Community support โ€” we wrapped up a successful food drive over the past two months, and weโ€™re incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed.

๐Ÿ“… Office Update: Our office is currently closed to the public and will reopen on January 5.

Thank you for being part of our community and for supporting this work throughout the year. We wish you a safe, restful, and meaningful holiday season. ๐Ÿ’›

12 Days of Impact: Day 10 - Transportation

Transportation plays a key role in independence. Whether itโ€™s getting to work, appointments, or community events โ€” accessible transportation options help people stay connected and active in their communities.

At Disability Advocates, we help people understand their transportation options, advocate for better accessibility in our region, and work alongside community partners to improve mobility for all.

Accessible transportation benefits everyone โ€” because when our communities are designed for all, we all move forward together.

12 Days of Impact: Day 9 - Accessibility Reviews

Your gift helps make our community more welcoming for everyone. ๐Ÿ’š

Creating accessible spaces isnโ€™t just the right thing to do โ€” itโ€™s smart business. Through our Accessibility Reviews, we partner with local businesses, nonprofits, architects, and developers to identify opportunities for greater access and inclusion.

Our Accessibility Consultants go beyond ADA and Michigan Construction Code compliance, offering site walk-throughs, plan reviews, and customized recommendations based on Universal Design principles. Each review helps make spaces easier to navigate, safer to use, and more welcoming for all.

Your support helps ensure accessibility becomes the standard โ€” not the exception โ€” across Kent County.

12 Days of Impact: Day 7 - Family Support

Your gift supports families as they plan for the future with confidence and care. ๐Ÿ’š Through our Family Support Services, we walk alongside families to ensure their loved one with a disability has the tools and resources needed to live independently.

Our step-by-step approach helps families navigate financial planning, community resources, and long-term care decisions. From independent living skills and housing options to guardianship, power of attorney, and supplemental income resources โ€” every plan is built around the personโ€™s unique goals and strengths.

12 Days of Impact: Day 6 - Veteran-Directed Care

Your gift helps empower veterans to live independently and with dignity. Through our Veteran-Directed Care program, weโ€™re helping those who served our country take charge of their long-term care and daily lives.

This self-directed program gives eligible veterans the flexibility to hire their own caregivers โ€” even trusted family members โ€” and manage a personalized care budget that meets their unique needs. From meal preparation to mobility assistance, VDC helps veterans live at home rather than in institutional settings.

Your support makes it possible for local veterans to maintain control, independence, and the comfort of home. ๐Ÿ’š
