👉 Intervertebral discs are cartilaginous cushions between vertebrae that act as shock absorbers and help provide flexibility to our spine.

👉 Herniated discs often occur from trauma or improperly loading the spine. It's commonly described as a compressed disc pushing on nearby nerves which can result in pain, numbness, or weakness. Most cases heal without surgery!

👉 Bulging discs happen when the outer layer is weak and protrudes beyond its normal space, often irritating nearby nerves. This too can cause pain, numbness, or weakness. These often heal well with conservative treatment! (This sounds a lot like a herniated disc! A big difference is the central part of the disc, the nucleus pulposus, is pushed outward in a herniated disc).

👉 Degenerative disc (disease) is a common age related condition where the discs lose hydration and elasticity. One of the best ways to prevent this is maintaining a healthy lifestyle and MOVE! Movement helps facilitate flow including hydration to the disc.

👉 Degenerative disc with osteophytes (bone spurs) is a chronic problem that results as degenerative disc disease progresses. In addition to possible pain, it commonly comes with stiffness and sometimes radiating pain.

❗️A slipped disc doesn't slip... it bulges (or herniates).

🧠 Intervertebral discs are firmly attached to the vertebra above and below, but they can bulge or herniate.

🤔 Disc herniations can be a result of various factors including age, poor mechanical loading, and biochemical changes in our bodies.

🗜️ Pain resulting from a disc herniation is generally a mechanical compression of the nearby nerves.

💪 Relief starts with understanding what's actually happening! The phrase "slipped disc" often makes people think they just need it pushed back in place.

👉 Unfortunately, it's not a quick and easy process. However, conservative care (chiropractic and/or physical therapy) is often all that's needed to relieve the pressure and restore movement.

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate whether a single session of spinal manipulation (SM) increases strength and cortical drive in the lower limb (soleus muscle) of elite Taekwondo athletes.

For sports chiropractors and multidisciplinary performance teams, this study offers actionable timing guidance: when SM is used, the strength benefit appears to peak within 30 minutes, while heightened corticospinal drive may persist for at least an hour. Practically, that suggests scheduling SM proximal to strength or power tasks—e.g., during warm-up prior to lower-limb loading, jump testing, or speed-strength sessions—to exploit the acute window.

Because the effect seems mediated more by descending cortical drive (V-wave) than by spinal reflex gain (H-reflex), pairing SM with motor practice that is skilful, high-intent, and velocity-specific could translate neural priming into functional performance. Caveats include the small, homogeneous sample (elite Taekwondo with subclinical spinal pain) and the short follow-up; do not generalize to all athletes or assume chronic gains. Use SM as an adjunct to evidence-based preparation (sleep, nutrition, warm-up, potentiation), and monitor individual responses (force outputs, RPE, readiness) to determine who benefits most and when to deploy the intervention within the training micro cycle.

🦴 What Is Spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis happens when one vertebra slips forward over the one below it, most commonly in the lower back. This can put pressure on nerves and lead to pain or instability.

It’s graded by the severity of forward slippage, and may have resulted from various reasons including degenerative, traumatic, or of unknown causes (idiopathic).

⚠️ Common Symptoms
• Low back pain
• Stiffness or tight hamstrings
• Pain that worsens with standing or walking
• Leg pain, tingling, or weakness
• Feeling “unstable” in the spine
