🚨 Thinking About Braces? Read This FIRST! 🚨

Did your orthodontist recommend pulling teeth to make room for braces? While this might seem like a standard approach, it’s not as common as you’d think anymore — and for good reason. Research has shown that extracting teeth to create space can reduce the size of the oral cavity, leaving less room for the tongue. This can increase the risk of obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep-disordered breathing issues, which affect everything from focus and energy levels to long-term health.

So why are so many of us dealing with crowded teeth and small jaws in the first place? Our ancestors didn’t have this problem — they grew up eating tough, fibrous foods like meat off the bone and raw vegetables, which naturally strengthened their jaw muscles and supported proper jaw growth. Today’s diet of soft, processed foods combined with poor oral muscle function has led to underdeveloped jaws and not enough room for teeth or the tongue.

Before committing to extractions, get a second opinion. A more function-focused approach might save you (or your child) from lifelong breathing issues and poor sleep. Reach out to Function Focused OMT to learn how strengthening oral muscles and improving function can make all the difference!

Mouth breathing doesn’t just affect your growth and development - it directly impacts your oral health by altering the delicate balance inside your mouth.

When you breathe through your mouth instead of your nose:
🦠Saliva dries up, reducing its natural cleansing & protective properties.
🦠Your mouth’s pH drops, creating a more acidic environment where cavity causing bacteria thrive.
🦠Bad bacteria overgrowth increases, contributing to gum inflammation, plaque buildup, and decay.
🦠You’re more likely to experience chronic bad breath - no matter how much you brush.

The good news? Myofunctional therapy helps correct mouth breathing by retraining proper oral posture and nasal breathing habits - protecting not just your smile, but your whole health.

Most people don’t realize that your nose isn’t just a passageway for air — it’s a high-performance filter, humidifier, and health optimizer. In fact, the nose performs over 30 essential functions that directly impact your overall health and well-being:

👉 Filtration & Immunity – Your nose filters out dust, allergens, bacteria, and viruses using tiny hairs (cilia) and mucus. This helps prevent infections and keeps your lungs cleaner.

👉 Air Conditioning – The nose humidifies and warms the air to body temperature before it reaches your lungs, making breathing more efficient and comfortable.

👉 Nitric Oxide Production – Breathing through your nose triggers the release of nitric oxide, which improves oxygen absorption, dilates blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, and enhances circulation.

👉 Proper Tongue Posture & Facial Development – Nasal breathing encourages correct tongue posture (resting on the roof of the mouth), which supports proper jaw growth, reduces the risk of malocclusion (crooked teeth), and helps shape facial symmetry.

👉 Nervous System Regulation – Nasal breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” state), reducing stress, lowering heart rate, and improving digestion.

👉 Sleep Quality & Snoring Reduction – Mouth breathing is linked to poor sleep quality, snoring, and even sleep apnea. Nasal breathing improves oxygen levels and sleep efficiency, leading to deeper, more restorative rest.

👉 Speech & Swallowing Function – Consistent nasal breathing supports proper tongue and lip function, which directly impacts speech clarity and swallowing mechanics.

Mouth breathing bypasses all of these critical functions, leaving your body working harder and less efficiently. That’s why Myo therapists are so passionate about helping people make the switch — it’s not just about breathing, it’s about optimizing how your body functions.

If you’ve been breathing through your mouth, it’s never too late to retrain your system. Your nose was literally designed for the job — let it do the work! 👃💨

Why Isn’t Myofunctional Therapy Mainstream? 🤔

If myofunctional therapy is so important for breathing, speech, sleep, and overall health — why isn’t it more widely known?

👉 Slow to Change: Medicine and dentistry tend to be reactive, focusing on treating symptoms rather than addressing underlying functional issues — which is exactly where myofunctional therapy shines.

👉 Fragmented Care: Issues like speech delays, breastfeeding challenges, and sleep apnea are often treated in isolation, without connecting them back to oral function and muscle balance.

👉 Lack of Awareness: Many healthcare professionals aren’t trained in orofacial myofunctional therapy, so they may overlook the root causes of issues like tongue ties, mouth breathing, TMJ pain, and poor sleep.

Education is key! Myofunctional therapy can transform lives by improving breathing, speech, sleep, and overall health — it’s time to bring it into the mainstream. 🌍💪

What’s the big deal with tongue ties anyway? 😛

Severe tongue ties are often caught early during breastfeeding or speech delays — but moderate ties? They’re the sneaky ones.

Moderate tongue ties often fly under the radar, forcing your body to compensate in ways that often lead to these symptoms.

✨ Headaches
✨ TMJ issues
✨ Neck and shoulder tension
✨ Crowded teeth

If you’re trying to prevent issues down the road or these symptoms sound familiar, it might be time to take a closer look at your tongue!

Take a moment and check in — where’s your tongue resting right now?

If it’s gently resting against the roof of your mouth WITH your teeth slightly apart AND your facial muscles relaxed — congratulations! You’re in the correct oral rest posture zone.

But let’s take it a step further:
Do you frequently experience headaches, neck or shoulder tension, or nighttime teeth grinding?

Even if your tongue seems to be in the right spot, your body could be instinctively compensating for a tongue tie, leading to excess muscle tension throughout your head, neck, and beyond.

Proper oral posture is more than just position — it’s about function too.
