Did you know that January is Glaucoma Awareness Month? Glaucoma is often referred to as the silent thief of sight, because symptoms typically don't arise until more moderate stages of the disease.
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve often associated with high eye pressure, but there's a lot more to the diagnosis than just eye pressure alone. Another important factor in assessing for glaucoma is looking at optic nerve tissue. Glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve over time, which can lead to peripheral vision loss.
One way to get an in-depth assessment of optic nerve health is through optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans. This machine uses infrared light to provide cross-sectional images of the back of the eye, including the macula, optic nerve, and blood vessels. It can also provide angiography scans, which shows blood flow to retinal blood vessels.
OCT imaging is helpful in tracking the progression glaucoma as well as other eye conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and more. Stay on top of your eye health and schedule your annual eye exam today!
