Last week Hospital Yojoa physicians Drs. Anderson and Iyamu along with FSU Global Health Fellow Dr. Le had the opportunity to travel to Valle de Ángeles to teach for the ICMDA International Postgraduate Diploma in Family Medicine.

Our team taught on antenatal care as well as labor management. The team discussed the current WHO recommendations and how to apply them in the context of Latin America.

Our team was encouraged to spend time with physicians who are eager to keep learning and growing in how they care for their patients.

Special thanks to Dr. Sheree Lynch, program coordinator, for the invitation and for the work she is doing to invest in family medicine training!

Last week, Hospital Yojoa physicians Dr. Esohe Iyamu and Dr. Hannah Anderson had the opportunity to participate in several days of medical training in La Moskitia, the most remote region of Honduras.

Made up of vast rainforest and difficult terrain, La Moskitia is home to several Indigenous people groups, including the Miskito, Tawahka, Mayangna, and Pech—each with their own language and cultural traditions. Geographic isolation makes healthcare delivery uniquely challenging in this region.

The nurses and parteras (traditional birth attendants) who attended the trainings were deeply impressive in their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. They asked thoughtful questions, shared stories from cases they have encountered, and actively supported one another. At the skills stations, participants practiced together and helped translate for colleagues more comfortable communicating in Miskito or Tawahka than in Spanish.

Training sessions focused on the recognition and management of preeclampsia and eclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage (using the WHO Bleeding After Birth model), shoulder dystocia, and breech delivery—specifically addressing how to manage these complications in low-resource settings. The team also had the opportunity to serve in two public health centers providing cervical cancer screening and obstetric ultrasound.

Trips like this are never accomplished alone. Hospital Yojoa is grateful to for coordinating logistics and providing critical regional context; to the local pastors who welcomed the team; to the healthcare professionals who shared their experience and insight; and to for safely transporting the team to and from La Moskitia. It was a privilege to serve alongside such dedicated partners.

Construction at the hospital site has kicked off, and big progress is being made this week!

On Monday and Tuesday the construction team placed and backfilled the storm drain piping, ensuring water is properly managed at the hospital entrance.

Yesterday, concrete was poured to form the storm drain outlets, providing appropriate reinforcement to the drainage system and moving us one step closer to a fully functional entrance.

At the top of the entrance road, regrading has officially begun, which is crucial to ensure safe and reliable access for construction equipment and eventually hospital patients.

Infrastructure may not be glamorous, but it is foundational! Each of these steps prepares the way for safe, accessible care for this community.

Thank you for following along and supporting the vision!

Today our team had the pleasure of welcoming local patronatos (community leaders) to Hospital Yojoa for coffee and meaningful conversation!
Together, we shared ideas, listened to one another’s perspectives, and talked through practical ways to partner in caring for the health and well-being of our communities.
We are encouraged by the strong local engagement and excitement surrounding this work. Building together with the community is at the heart of Hospital Yojoa.
