Language matters.
Power dynamics matter.
Trauma matters.

The typical framing of consent in healthcare centers around "getting" it. Medical, nursing, and midwifery industrial complexes often frame it as "Did you get consent?" or "I need to get your consent." This language positions the power in the person obtaining consent, reinforces a power dynamic rather than disrupting it, and parades the process itself a means to an end so that the provider can move to wielding the next step of power. To get, to be gotten, to have been got: consent in this way is transitory and provider-powered. Particularly when it comes to intimate exams, this is harmful and often violent framing.

Here, replacing the word "get" with the word "received" is meant to displace this typical linguistic and logistical power dynamic. Reframed as whether we "receive" consent, this language creates an understanding that the patient's power and interaction is what is central to the process. When consent is received, the provider is the one waiting to understand something, dependent on the patient to determine next steps, passive in the dynamic instead of active.

Let us ask of ourselves, of our colleagues, and of our students and Residents:

"Did you receive their consent?"
