Steelers NFL player, T.J. Watt, suffered a partially collapsed lung after receiving dry needling. Dry needling is a form of orthopedic acupuncture that is being taught to other health care providers in as little as a weekend course. Licensed acupuncturists have a Master's Degree that takes 3.5 to 4 years to complete, at least 900 of clinical hours, have had to pass at least 3 national board exams (4 if they prescribe herbs), and have to take 60 hours of continuing education every 4 years to maintain their license. In many states dry needling is illegal and this is the reason why. In the article, Patrick Queen of the Steelers states, "One [acupuncture], you got to go to school for a longer period of time. There's a whole much more scientific thing that goes into it. I don't do the whole dry needle thing. I'm actually scared of dry needling, so I kind of stay away from that stuff."
