💙 April is Autism Awareness Month | April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day 💙

Each April, communities around the world come together to recognize Autism Awareness Month—a time to increase understanding, promote inclusion, and celebrate the strengths of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Autism Awareness Month has its roots in the early 1970s, when advocates first designated April to help raise public understanding and support. In 2007, the United Nations officially recognized April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, highlighting the importance of acceptance, access to resources, and equal opportunities for individuals with autism.

Today, the movement continues to grow—shifting beyond awareness toward meaningful acceptance, inclusion, and support across all aspects of community life.

At Siskiyou Community Health Center, we believe in care that sees and supports the whole person. This month—and every day—we stand with individuals with autism and their families.

This week is National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, a nationwide effort to share honest, science-based information about substance use and help people make informed choices about their health.

Drug and alcohol misuse can affect anyone, but knowledge is one of the most powerful tools we have for prevention. Understanding the risks, recognizing warning signs, and knowing where to turn for help can make a meaningful difference for individuals, families, and our communities.

At Siskiyou Community Health Center, we believe that access to accurate information and compassionate care are essential parts of supporting healthier lives. If you or someone you care about has questions about substance use or needs support, helpful resources are available:

🔹 National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA): https://nida.nih.gov/research-topics

🔹 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): https://www.samhsa.gov

🔹 Find Treatment Services: https://findtreatment.gov

🔹 Call or Text 988: The Su***de and Crisis Lifeline Understands that Life’s Challenges Can Be Difficult

Together, we can build healthier communities by sharing facts, supporting prevention, and helping people find the care they need.

Celebrating Women Who Changed Healthcare – Women’s History Month

During Women’s History Month, we recognize the remarkable women who helped shape modern medicine and expand access to care for communities everywhere.

Women like Rebecca Lee Crumpler, who dedicated her work to caring for underserved patients after the Civil War. Florence Nightingale, whose work transformed patient care and hospital safety. And Antonia Novello, who championed public health and health equity.

Their legacy lives on in community-focused healthcare today.

Across the country, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs)—like Siskiyou Community Health Center—continue this mission by ensuring high-quality, affordable healthcare is available to everyone, regardless of income, insurance status, or background.

Today we also celebrate the many women working in healthcare right here in our community—providers, nurses, dental professionals, behavioral health specialists, outreach staff, and leaders—who carry forward the work of improving health and expanding access to care.

💜 Thank you to the women who have shaped healthcare history—and to those who continue to build a healthier future every day.

🎗️ National Cancer Prevention Month

Cancer prevention starts with everyday choices. While not all cancers can be prevented, there are important steps you can take to lower your risk and protect your health.

Here are evidence-based ways to reduce your cancer risk:

✅ Avoid to***co – Smoking and to***co use are linked to multiple types of cancer. Quitting at any time makes a difference.

🥗 Eat a healthy, balanced diet – Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit processed meats and highly processed foods.

🏃 Stay physically active – Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week. Regular movement helps maintain a healthy weight and lowers risk.

⚖️ Maintain a healthy weight – Obesity is linked to several cancers, including breast and colorectal cancer.

☀️ Protect your skin – Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and avoid tanning beds.

💉 Stay up to date on vaccinations – Vaccines like HPV and Hepatitis B can help prevent cancers caused by infections.

🩺 Get recommended screenings – Early detection saves lives. Talk with your healthcare provider about screenings for breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer based on your age and risk factors.

Limiting alcohol consumption and knowing your family history are also important parts of prevention.
