Sharing some relevant information "after spending time Food Bank today, and speaking to the people getting food. Here are some things I learned from those in need:

1. Everyone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They can rarely use it because it needs milk and butter which is hard to get from regular food banks.
2. Boxed milk is a treasure, as kids need it for cereal which they also get a lot of.
3. Everyone donates pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.
4. They cannot eat all the awesome canned veggies and soup unless you put a can opener in too or buy pop tops.
5. Oil is a luxury but needed for Rice a-Roni which they also get a lot of.
6. Spices or salt and pepper would be a real Christmas gift.
7. Tea bags and coffee make them feel like you care.
8. Sugar and flour are treats.
9. They fawn over fresh produce donated by farmers and grocery stores.
10. Seeds are cool in Spring and Summer because growing can be easy for some.
11. They rarely get fresh meat.
12. Tuna and crackers make a good lunch.
13. Hamburger Helper goes nowhere without ground beef. Butter or eggs.
14. They get lots of peanut butter and jelly but usually not sandwich bread.
15. Butter or margarine is nice too.
16. Eggs are a real commodity.
17. Cake mix and frosting makes it possible to make a child’s birthday cake.
18. Dishwashing detergent and laundry is very expensive and is always appreciated.
19. Feminine hygiene products are a luxury and women will cry over that.
20. Everyone loves Stove Top Stuffing.
In all the years I have donated food at the Holidays, I bought what I thought they wanted, but have never asked. I am glad I did. If you are helping a Family this holiday season- maybe this can help you tailor it more. It does for me!"

Do you live in one of the counties highlighted in Blue? If so, please consider holding an Overdose Awareness Day event later this month. The counties in Blue do not have Overdose Awareness Days planned yet, at least as far as we know.

Harm Reduction Ohio can help you make an event a success. International Overdose Awareness Day is Tuesday, August 31. Many people will be holding events a few days before that.

Harm Reduction Ohio can support your efforts by providing Narcan, fentanyl test strips, literature or other things you might need.

Gov. Mike DeWine recently signed a law making Overdose Awareness Day an official day of mourning in Ohio. State flags will be flown at half staff in honor of the more than 35,000 Ohio residents who have died of drug overdoses in the last decade.

Gov. DeWine's administration is making a special effort to distribute Narcan, the overdose-reversing drug, at Overdose Awareness Day events and events held during Recovery Month in September. This is a great opportunity to prevent future overdose deaths.

Most Overdose Awareness Day events are being organized by people in recovery, parents who've lost loved ones, treatment centers and local health departments. Anyone can do it. Please join this effort. Contact katie@harmreductionohio.org or send us a Facebook message.

Thanks. Let's save some lives this month!

In 2020, over 4000 people in Ohio died from drug overdoses.
While it may have been a choice to use drugs, people do not want to die from using.

It is a common mistake to think that he**in is the only drug that causes overdoses. All other illegal drugs, except cannabis, can cause overdoses. This happens when the drugs taken contain other drugs like fentanyl or carfentanil. Many people are dying from overdoses of co***ne, m**h, ecstasy, pressed pills and other street drugs because they are mixed with fentanyl or carfentanil. In fact, 72% or more drug overdose deaths in Ohio involved fentanyl or carfentanil.

Any overdose that involves fentanyl or carfentanil can be reversed with Narcan.

Narcan saves lives.

Had a succesful socially distanced outreach event in Clermont County. Wasn't sure how the new abnormal would work with reaching our communities in need but it went well! Very grateful for the opportunity to reach out to and possibly save the lives of our neighbors in need. Harm Reduction Ohio is here to help. If you or someone you know needs access to care in reducing the harm or stigmas associated with drug use reach out to us!
