9 Tips to Help Prepare for Thanksgiving:

1: Set your table, and your boundaries.
2: Step outside. Fresh air resets your mind.
3: Connection over perfection. Always.
4: Gratitude, not guilt. You deserve peace.
5 Listen to your limits. Rest is allowed.
6. Drink water. Hydration helps more than you think.
7. Make space to recharge. Even five minutes counts.
8. Reach out if it's heavy. You're not alone.
9. Give yourself peace. That's something to be thankful for.

Teach your kids emotional courage by practicing it yourself.

One day they're holding your hand.
Another day they're watching how you handle life when it gets heavy.

They notice more than you think.

They notice when you're tired but still choose to show up.
They notice when you apologize instead of pretending you're always right.
They notice when you talk instead of shutting down.
They notice when you choose patience over anger.
When you choose honesty over pride.
When you choose connection over silence.

We tell kids to "use their words," but too many of us grew up learning to hide ours.
We were taught to be strong - but never taught what real strength actually is.

Real strength isn't stuffing things down.
It's having the courage to feel them, face them, and grow through them.

The truth is: your emotional health doesn't just shape your life - it shapes the future you hand down.
Your children won't inherit your bank account or your job title first.
They inherit your emotional patterns.

If you want your kids to communicate, show them how.
If you want them to heal, let them see you doing the work too.
If you want them to be emotionally brave, give them a father who chooses courage over silence.

Because healing isn't selfish.
It's leadership.
And it starts with you.

4 Facts About Talking It Out

Naming emotions calms the brain.
Putting feelings into words reduces amygdala activity - your brain's stress alarm.

Talking organizes thoughts.
Speaking activates logic centers, helping you make sense of tangled emotions.

Connection reduces stress.
Honest conversation releases oxytocin and serotonin - your body's natural calmers.

Silence stores stress; speech releases it.
Bottling emotions increases cortisol and tension, while talking lowers both.

On this Veterans Day, we want to remind you: you don't have to wait months to get the mental health care you deserve.

If you're a veteran living with PTSD, anxiety, depression, or the weight of past experiences, help is closer than you think.

Through VA Community Care, your Primary Care Physician can send a referral for Ellie Mental Health, meaning you can start therapy outside the VA, without delay, and fully covered.

Just ask your VA or primary care provider:

"I'd like a Community Care referral for mental health at Ellie Mental Health in Grapevine or North Richland Hills."

At Ellie, we have clinicians who are veterans themselves and who understand military culture, transition stress, and trauma. We offer trauma-informed care, including EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and CBT, tailored for veterans and their families.

You served your country. Now it's time to take care of yourself.

This Veterans Day, reach out. We're ready to walk with you.

Struggling to set boundaries without feeling like the bad guy?

This podcast episode is for anyone who's ever struggled to say no, felt drained by unclear expectations, or wondered how to protect their peace without burning bridges.

Therapists Miranda Barker, LICSW, Letisha Harris, MA and Madison Wozniak, LCSW have an honest, practical conversation inspired by the book "Set Boundaries, Find Peace" by Nedra Glover Tawwab.

We explore:
🔹 What healthy boundaries actually look like in real life
🔹 How trauma and guilt can make boundary-setting harder
🔹 The difference between time, material, emotional, and internal boundaries
🔹 How we've grown (and stumbled) through boundary work ourselves

Whether you’re a therapist, a client, or just someone navigating the messiness of relationships, this episode offers tools and takeaways you can use right away. Here's the link to the episode on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/07cgH1wdmbfORDCfHiT0Bp?si=73TM0KZzQlSqSCGyreN-lg

Today, on , we hold space for the losses that changed us— the ones we speak of often and the ones we carry quietly.

Ever zoned out during a meeting, driven somewhere and not remembered how you got there, or felt totally disconnected in a stressful moment?

These aren’t just quirks.... they can be signs of dissociation, a powerful and often misunderstood coping mechanism.

In therapy spaces, we talk about dissociation often. But outside of them, people may not recognize it or know what to do when it shows up. For folks with trauma histories, dissociation isn’t just occasional spacing out—it’s the nervous system protecting itself when things feel too overwhelming to process.

➡️ In this new blog post, Ellie therapist Miranda Barker, LICSW, breaks down:
- What dissociation actually is (and isn’t)
- Why the body uses it as a survival response
- How trauma-informed approaches like EMDR, parts work, and somatic therapy can help
- Practical grounding strategies that reconnect people to the present

Whether you're a clinician, a mental health advocate, or someone who’s felt disconnected and didn’t have a word for it—this is worth the read.
