Antaḥkaraṇa - Antaḥ means "inner" and karaṇa means "instrument" - is a concept in Ayurvedic and Yogic philosophy, referring to the entirety of the mind - ranging from the thinking aspect, to the sense of self or “I”, and the faculty for discrimination.
Antahkarana covers all the functions of the mind, namely the manas (the mind or lower mind), buddhi (the intellect or higher mind), chitta (memory, or image making), and ahamkara (the ego / “I”-self). In this way, Antahkarana refers to the entire psychological process, all the mind levels functioning as a unit, with all parts working together as a whole.
It is the link between the body and the spirit or the bridge between the middle and higher mind. The term may also be defined as the source of thinking, or the mind, soul, heart or conscience.
When this process is disturbed it means we cannot properly process and reintegrate our experiences - and just like unprocessed food in our gut, this can lead to other health ailments and illnesses.
