How to Tell the Difference

This time of year a lot of people start feeling congestion, headaches, and sinus pressure. But how do you know if it’s seasonal allergies or a sinus infection? They can feel very similar, but there are some key differences.

Pain/pressure + thick mucus + possible fever = possible sinus infection.

Clear draining, itchy eyes, itchy ears, no fever=seasonal allergies.

If symptoms last more than 10 days, worsen after improving, or include significant facial pain or fever, it may be time to see us.

I did the numbers. 98% of ALL patients we have seen this week are positive for the Flu. There is a big difference in waiting to be tested AT LEAST 24 hours after symptoms started. We are getting lots of people that are testing negative because they tested too soon; but come back a day later and are positive instantly.
If you don’t suspect you have the flu, you will want to be extra careful in clinics/urgent care. Hospitals are full. ER’s are full.

Winter has officially worn out Its welcome at the clinic.

Unfortunately, we are also seeing an increase in RSV cases in our community🫣

What is RSV?
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms — but it can be more serious in infants, young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

Days 2-4 are the worst for symptoms.

Common Signs & Symptoms:
• Runny nose
• Cough
• Sneezing
• Fever
• Wheezing
• Decreased appetite
• In infants: irritability, poor feeding, or trouble breathing

⚠️ Get medical care right away if you notice fast breathing, retractions (skin pulling in around ribs), bluish lips or fingernails, or signs of dehydration. This is an ER TRIP!!

How RSV Spreads:
• Through respiratory droplets when someone coughs or sneezes
• Direct contact (kissing a child’s face, sharing drinks)
• Touching contaminated surfaces (RSV can live on surfaces for hours!)
• Close contact in schools, daycare, and crowded settings

How to Help Prevent the Spread: DO NOT KISS BABIES!

✔ Wash hands frequently
✔ Disinfect commonly touched surfaces
✔ Keep sick children home
✔ Avoid close contact with high-risk individuals if you’re ill.
