Individual skills portion of the West Regional Basketball Tournament puts the “Special” in “Olympics!” It’s where achievement is never measured in wins/losses, but by gritty determination, beaming smiles and exuberant high-fives and fist bumps. We captured in our photos on Feb. 21 a lot of those inspirational moments at Great Bend High School Panther Athletic Center.

Thank you to our incredible Coaches, tireless Volunteers, and unstoppable Athletes for showing us what sport and competition is truly about!

Storm Team was Solid Gold during the West Region Cheerleading Competition at Great Bend High School Panther Athletic Center on Saturday morning (Feb. 21, 2026). Logan got a special treat during his final shot while doing individual skills participation in the West Regional Basketball Tournament at Great Bend High School PAC on Saturday. His final shot was off its mark, but a Special Olympics Volunteer, AKA Barton Men’s Basketball Player, took the “alley-oop” and slammed it home.

That option is probably not in the Special Olympics rule book, but it sure energized Logan and the crowd watching him. Special Thank-You from us for the DUNK and making Logan’s perfect alley-oop possible.

And thank you to all the Special Olympics Volunteers and Coaches on Saturday who made the West Regional Tournament special for all the athletes who participated.

We said “See You Later” today at Mel Orr’s memorial service at Rosewood Memorial Garden. Yes, there were lots of tears, but also smiles and laughter while sharing fond Mel Memories on a beautiful mid-February morning.

Things are about to get loud and energized for Storm Basketball and Cheer Teams as the Special Olympics West Regional Cheerleading and Basketball Tournament draws closer at Great Bend High School Panther Activity Center. This exciting event takes place Feb. 21.

Fourteen volunteer positions still remain for the tourney, ranging from Officiating, Scorebook, to Individual Skills Aide.
