This Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing Dr. Virginia Apgar, a woman whose innovation forever changed the care of newborn babies. As a pioneering physician and anesthesiologist, she created the Apgar Score - a quick assessment still used around the world to help evaluate a baby’s health immediately after birth.
At a time when women faced major barriers in medicine, Dr. Apgar rose to become a leader in her field and left a legacy that continues to impact mothers, babies, and families every single day. Her work is a powerful reminder that women in medicine have long helped shape better outcomes, stronger care, and brighter futures for generations to come.

Allergies getting the best of you with spring starting to bloom? Many people with allergies take antihistamines for relief. Studies show that some over-the-counter (OTC) allergy medications are safe to use during pregnancy, including
chlorpheniramine
dexchlorpheniramine
Newer antihistamines, such as cetirizine and loratadine, may also be safe. And there is a corticosteroid nasal spray that is safe to use during pregnancy. But one of the most common OTC decongestants, pseudoephedrine, has been linked to a small risk of abdominal wall birth defects. Do not use pseudoephedrine during the first 3 months of pregnancy.
Check with your ob-gyn before taking any over-the-counter allergy medication.

For Women’s History Month, we honor Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte (1865–1915), a member of the Omaha Nation and the first Native American woman in the United States to earn a medical degree. After graduating from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1889, she returned to care for her community, providing treatment across the Omaha Reservation and later helping establish a hospital in Walthill, Nebraska. Her life’s work expanded access to care and stands as a powerful example of leadership, compassion, and advocacy in women’s health.

Did you know a baby's brain more than doubles in size during the first year of life. By age five, it reaches about 90% of its adult size.

Thank goodness for modern times! Did you know the earliest known record of gynecological care is the Kahun Gynecological Papyrus from 1800 BC, which featured very different, often bizarre, treatments compared to modern medicine.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Did you know the first St. Patrick's Day parade took place in New York City in 1762, long before similar events in Ireland, becoming a huge part of the celebration?

Today for Women’s History Month, we honor Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing A fearless reformer, and a woman who changed history through compassion, intelligence, and action.
When Florence Nightingale was 17 (in 1837), she experienced what she felt was a divine "calling" to dedicate her life to nursing, a profession her wealthy, upper-class family strongly disapproved of, leading her to refuse a marriage proposal and set her on a path to secretly pursue training despite societal expectations.
Her work during the Crimean War didn’t just save lives in the moment; it transformed healthcare for generations. Her legacy is a reminder that real strength often looks like service, courage, and relentless purpose.

Most of us sooo look forward to that morning cup of coffee to help start the day but if you're expecting you may have questions about how much Java you should be consuming if at all.
Research suggests that moderate caffeine consumption (less than 200 milligrams per day) does not cause miscarriage or preterm birth. That’s the amount in one 12-ounce cup of coffee. Remember that caffeine also is found in tea, chocolate, energy drinks, and soft drinks.
Caffeine can interfere with sleep and contribute to nausea and light-headedness. Caffeine also can increase urination and lead to dehydration.
If you have additional questions, speak with your provider about what is right for your pregnancy.

Women's History Month Spotlight: Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler
She was the first African American woman to earn a medical degree (M.D.) in the United States (1864). She was a trailblazer who overcame intense racism and sexism to practice medicine, serving poor women and children in Boston and formerly enslaved people in post-Civil War Virginia, and authored one of the first medical books by an African American, A Book of Medical Discourses, in 1883.
