Tuesday Skin Education: Shingles vs Hives 👩🏻⚕️✨
They may look similar, but they are VERY different conditions
At our office, we often see patients unsure if their rash is something allergic… or something more serious
🔴 Shingles is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus
It presents as a painful, one-sided rash with blisters that follows a nerve
Many patients feel burning or tingling pain before the rash even appears
⚪️ Hives are an allergic or immune response
They show up as itchy, raised welts that can move around the body and usually resolve quickly
✨ Why this matters
Shingles requires early treatment to reduce complications
Hives are treated differently by identifying triggers and calming inflammation
👩🏻⚕️ At Dr. Angela Azar’s office, our board-certified dermatology team provides accurate diagnosis and personalized care so you’re not left guessing
If you notice a new or unusual rash, get it checked early 🤍
