Sinus Infection Factsâť—
Mucosal thickening is when the lining of your sinuses (the mucosa) becomes swollen or thicker than normal, usually because of inflammation. Some studies have found mucosal thickening in sinus passages more often in July, August, September, and December—months associated with pollen, mold, and viral epidemics.
Swelling of the mucosa → When the sinus lining thickens, it narrows the small drainage openings (called ostia) that normally let mucus flow out into the nose.
Poor drainage → Mucus gets trapped inside the sinus cavity instead of clearing out.
Reduced airflow → Less air circulation in the sinus makes it a warm, moist space—perfect for germs.
Bacterial or viral growth → With mucus stuck inside, bacteria (or sometimes fungi) can multiply, turning simple congestion into a sinus infection.
So, in short: Mucosal thickening blocks drainage → trapped mucus → infection develops.
