John Long, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and cherished great-grandfather, passed away on November 23, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, kindness, and quiet strength that will be remembered for generations.

Born on August 31, 1946, John began his early career working on the family farm, where he learned the value of dedication and perseverance; traits he carried with him throughout his life. This foundation of discipline and commitment led him to a long and respected career at Union Pacific, which he joined in 1968 and from which he proudly retired in 2007.

John was the beloved husband of Diane (DeDe), with whom he shared a lifetime of love and enduring partnership for 61 years. Together, they built a life centered on family. He was a devoted father to his two children, Mark and Heather (Loren Sharp), always offering steady guidance and unwavering support.

His pride shone brightly in his role as a grandfather to Trent (Megan), Nic, and Jaden Long, and Sterling (Addi) and Alexis Sharp. In recent years, John was "promoted" to one of his greatest roles yet, great-grandfather to Easton Long and Grace Sharp. They brought him tremendous joy, and his face would light up whenever they were near, a testament to his deep and abiding love for his family's newest generation.

John found comfort and peace in the simple things in life. Camping, fishing, and tending to his garden were some of his lifelong passions, and many of his happiest memories were made outdoors, immersed in nature and surrounded by the people he loved most.

John’s presence brought comfort and warmth to every room. His absence leaves a deep and lasting void in the lives of his family and friends, but the rich tapestry of memories he created and the boundless love he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

John is survived by his beloved wife, DeDe; his children, Mark and Heather (Loren Sharp); his five grandchildren; and his two great-grandchildren, along with sisters Carol (Lee Scott), Margaret (Jerry Thoutt), Esther (Phil Alles), and brother Steve (Tami) Long. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Martha Long, Son Jeffery, and brothers Gene and George.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Allnutt Funeral Service, Macy Chapel, located at 6521 W. 20th Street, Greeley, Colorado, 80634. The service is scheduled for December 5, 2025, at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
