Protect Tiny Teeth
Baby teeth are so important because of their key role in saving space for a child’s permanent teeth. They stay in a child’s mouth for 8-10 years and affect their speaking, chewing, and, of course, smiling. Baby teeth can also indicate a child’s overall quality of health. Untreated tooth decay can cause oral infections that enter the bloodstream, leading to other serious health problems and allowing bacteria to spread to new adult teeth.

Tooth decay is the primary cause of toothaches for most children and adults. This is because bacteria in your mouth thrive on the sugars and starches in your food. These bacteria form a sticky plaque that clings to the surface of your teeth.
Acids produced by the bacteria in plaque can eat through the hard, white coating on the outside of your teeth (enamel), creating a cavity. The first sign of decay may be pain when you eat something sweet, cold, or hot. Sometimes, decay will show as a brown or white spot on the tooth.

February 9th is National Toothache Day.
Did you know that tooth decay is the primary cause of most toothaches in children and adults?
A toothache rarely goes away on its own, and ignoring it can have serious consequences. If left untreated, a minor issue can quickly escalate into something more severe.
Infections can worsen, with bacteria spreading deeper into the tooth and surrounding areas, potentially leading to abscesses or even life-threatening systemic infections.
Tooth loss becomes a real possibility, as severe decay or gum disease can weaken teeth to the point where they either fall out or require extraction.

When people think about improving their health, things like getting more exercise, eating more vegetables, and getting more sleep often come to mind. Taking better care of your gums and teeth probably doesn’t make the list, but it should. Dental and medical professionals alike agree that gum health is important not just for your mouth, but for your whole body.

February is Gum Disease Awareness Month, a time to focus on preventing and treating periodontal disease, a common infection that can lead to tooth loss and affect overall health, often progressing unnoticed in its early stages.
Gum disease is caused by bacteria and plaque left in the mouth. Bacteria and plaque begin to infect the gum tissue, leading to pain and inflammation. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss and normally begins without symptoms. Most people do not recognize they have gum disease until it is past the point of quick, at-home treatments.

Overall health and wellness are deeply intertwined with oral health; a healthy mouth supports bodily functions like eating and speaking, while poor oral hygiene, leading to inflammation and bacteria, can increase risks for serious systemic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and cognitive decline, making daily brushing, flossing, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits crucial for preventing both oral and whole-body problems.
