Why Pain Feels Worse in the Winter

🥶 Ever Notice Pain Feels Louder in the Cold?

Cold weather affects more than just comfort. It can increase nerve sensitivity, tighten connective tissue, and exaggerate postural compensation patterns. That’s why aches and pains often feel worse this time of year.

At About Body Massage Therapy & Wellness Center, our neuromuscular approach focuses on why your body is compensating—not just where it hurts—helping create longer-lasting relief.

Cold Weather & Tight Muscles

❄️ Cold Outside = Tight Muscles Inside ❄️

At About Body Massage Therapy & Wellness Center, we see it every winter—cold temperatures cause muscles to tighten and circulation to slow. This can lead to:
• Stiffness and reduced mobility
• Old injuries flaring up
• Increased neck, hip, and low-back tension

Neuromuscular massage helps restore proper blood flow, reduce protective muscle guarding, and keep your body moving comfortably all winter long.

Understanding Chronic Pain: Your Muscles and Nervous System Need a Reset

Chronic pain doesn’t always mean long-term damage.
Often it means your nervous system has been in “protective mode” too long.

Over time:

Muscles stay in a guarded state

Nerves become hypersensitive

Fascia stiffens

Your brain learns to expect pain

Neuromuscular therapy helps retrain the nervous system by:

Releasing guarded muscles

Improving blood/oxygen flow

Reducing nerve irritation

Resetting the brain’s pain interpretation

Restoring natural movement patterns

Example Scenario

Lydia struggled with chronic upper back and shoulder pain for 8 years.

Her muscles had developed:

Layers of tension

Adhesions

Trigger points

Compensations pulling her shoulders forward

NMT sessions focused on:

Rhomboids

Pec major/minor

Subscapularis

Serratus anterior

Upper traps

Levator scap

As her muscles released and her posture corrected, her nervous system gradually stopped interpreting movement as “danger.”

Her chronic pain decreased dramatically—giving her her life back.

A Thanksgiving Thank-You: Grateful for Your Trust, Growth, and Healing

As we gather around the table this Thanksgiving, our hearts are full of gratitude — and you are right at the center of it.

At About Body Wellness Center, we believe healing is a partnership. Every time you walk through our doors, you entrust us with something deeply personal: your health, your pain, your goals, and your hopes for a better tomorrow. For that trust, we are truly thankful.

Thank you for choosing us to support you on your wellness journey. Thank you for sharing your stories, for showing up (even when pain makes it hard), and for believing that change is possible. Your progress — whether big or small — inspires us every single day.

Here’s a recent review from one of our clients:

“I have been dealing with chronic neck and shoulder pain for years — headaches, tight traps, and that constant ache that just never goes away. After a few neuromuscular massage sessions at About Body Wellness Center, things started to change. The therapist didn’t just press on sore spots; she talked me through why my muscles were so tight, how posture was contributing, and what to do at home. For the first time in years, I feel like I’m moving toward healing, not just managing pain.”

Reading feedback like this fills us with gratitude. We feel honored to be part of your journey — and even more motivated to continue deepening our practice and our care.

Our Thanksgiving Message to You

Thank you for being more than clients — for being partners in healing.

Thank you for your patience, trust, and commitment.

Thank you for letting us guide, teach, and support you.

Thank you for the opportunity to grow and improve through your feedback and your progress.

This Thanksgiving, we celebrate you — your courage, your resilience, and your journey. From all of us at About Body Wellness Center: may your day be full of warmth, rest, and gratitude. We’re honored to walk beside you.

Neuromuscular Massage: Why It Works When Other Treatments Don’t

Neuromuscular Massage (NMT) is different from traditional relaxation massage.

NMT:

Targets specific muscles causing pain

Works deeply but intentionally

Uses trigger point therapy

Addresses nerve pathways

Balances muscle groups

Corrects posture-based dysfunction

Releases chronic tension patterns

Improves joint mechanics

It isn’t just “deep pressure.” It’s corrective work.

Example Scenario

Josh, a runner, kept feeling a stabbing pain on the outside of his knee.
He tried rest, new shoes, even stretching… nothing worked.

Why?

His pain came from:

A tight TFL

Underactive glute max

A shortened psoas

Trigger points in glute med

NMT connected the dots between his hip mechanics, gait, and knee strain.
When we released the TFL, strengthened the glutes, and balanced his hips—his “knee pain” finally resolved.

This is why neuromuscular work is so effective:
It treats the source, not just the symptoms.

How Muscles Create Pain (Even When “Nothing Is Wrong”)

Most pain people experience is musculoskeletal, not structural.
Meaning: it’s the result of how your muscles pull, compensate, and communicate—not necessarily an injury.

Here’s how muscles create pain:

Trigger points refer pain to other areas

Tension patterns pull joints out of alignment

Compensation creates overuse in secondary muscles

Restricted fascia limits movement

Weakness in one area forces another area to overwork

Nerve entrapments cause radiating pain, tingling, or numbness

Neuromuscular massage identifies these imbalances and corrects the root muscular dysfunction—something simple massage often misses.

Example Scenario

Sarah had wrist pain for months. Doctors suspected carpal tunnel.
But the real issue?

Tightness in her forearm flexors, pec minor, and scalene muscles from typing and phone use.

Those tight muscles were compressing nerves upstream, causing symptoms downstream.
After releasing the upper chest, scalenes, and forearms, her “wrist pain” disappeared.

Pain rarely comes from where you feel it.
