Self-harm is often misunderstood, but for many people it is a way of coping with overwhelming emotions. It can be a way someone tries to express deep emotional distress, feel a sense of control, punish themselves, or find temporary relief from negative feelings.
There are many stressors that can contribute to someone struggling with self-harm, including being bullied, major life changes, pressure at school or work, family conflict or relationship problems, financial stress, low self-esteem, or ongoing struggles with anxiety, depression, or stress. Experiences like grief and loss, abuse, trauma, or complex mental health challenges can also make it harder for someone to regulate emotions and cope safely.
Understanding the reasons behind self-harm helps us respond with compassion rather than judgment. If you or someone you know needs support, call our compassionate Client Engagement Team at 920-437-8256 to schedule an appointment. 💙
