Shucks, I don’t even know what to say.

Congratulations to Wilbur Pan, Anna Fultz Braun and Lou Figueroa for their victories in our local board of education election.

A big thank you to everyone who voted for me. In reality there were many amazing candidates, and it was inspiring to see so many great people willing to give their time and talent so freely. I still can’t believe I won.

East Brunswick is the only place I want to be and I am so grateful for the opportunity you have given me. I will make you all proud.

I received an email question regarding what I actually know about 504 plans and IEPs as an optometrist. It’s a fair question.

Here’s the answer in a nutshell.

Parents come to my office frustrated because their child sees perfect 20/20 but reads below grade level or struggles with attention and behavior in school.

There are multiple ICD-10 codes available to describe visual processing conditions. These medical findings are valid for 504 plan and IEP considerations.

Non Verbal Learning Disabilities (NVLD) are in an estimated 3-4% of the population and affect things like fine motor control, social skills and executive function because of its effect on visual-spatial sensory interpretation.

Every child deserves their best opportunity for success. That starts with the recognition of all kinds of learning impairments and intervening early.

My kids and I like to play a game called “squished banana” in which one (or both) of them knocks me down, then climbs on top of me for a full body hug.

I’m not going to lie, being a squished banana is the best part of my day. Hugs and physical affection release all the good chemicals in your body, helping you to be both happier and healthier.

Friendly reminder to hug a loved one, friend or pet every day. Life is not just about existing, it’s about connection and camaraderie.

Melatonin is a popular over the counter (OTC) sleep supplement. However, OTC supplements have very little FDA and regulatory input. Often times the claims made my the manufacturers are speculative and not backed by known scientific information.

It’s important to read through literature and analyze it critically. This studies matches similar health with no acknowledgement of diet and states in its conclusion that lifestyle factors may have influenced the results. As such, the only conclusion drawn is that further research is needed. Earth shattering, no?

As a medical professional I recommend stress management instead of quick fixes like pills and potions. Consider yoga, tai chi, breathing exercises, therapy, or other non chemical interventions and don’t forget to consult your doctor if you have questions about your personal health.
