Two years early??

In March 2022, I purchased my current car, a 2017 Chevrolet Volt Premier ("Lightning's Girl"). I most likely overpaid for some services from the dealership, but the car has stayed loyal and true to me for the past four years. I entered into a six-year financing contract. But you know me. I can't just pay the minimum and be done with it....

I made it to the 1600’s and gave up.

I do enjoy finding new rabbit holes to dive into on the Mastodon social media network. Such is the case with this one. This website chronicles the history of language, and this post here actually chronicles the evolution of what we know as English. And even if you go back 100 years ... 200 years ... even further ... you'll discover that our English language has evolved and changed and adapted....

Allen’s Day 2026

Today is a sad anniversary. It's the moment when death touched me and nobody prepared me for it. On February 20, 1970, my baby brother Allen - just three years young - was critically injured in a single-car crash in Rensselaer County. My maternal grandfather hit a tree; Allen (who was not belted in) went flying through the windshield upon impact....

Zen and the art of trivia hosting

One of the most influential books of my college years was Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, a book that works as both a repair manual and a tome on life. And in the concept of such motorcycle maintenance, I've now developed a routine for my two trivia hosting stints each week. Trust me, it took a while, but it's working....

Kate Smith, Irving Berlin, and God Bless America

I wrote this article about 25 years ago for the music magazine Goldmine, and felt like dusting it off this morning for all of you. In recent weeks, the collectible value of "God Bless America" has risen. The original 78 (Victor 26198-A), which previously had a near-mint collectible value of $4, has risen to nearly $25 in Internet auctions. The song title has appeared on T-shirts, on fire station marquees and on church bulletin boards....

A personal memory of the Rev. Jesse Jackson

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, an unwavering civil rights activist and two-time Presidential candidate, has been called to glory. He was 84. His commitment to equal rights and humanity was unparalleled. And even into his final days, he still spoke for justice and faith. He came into a broken world, and did his best to help heal it wherever he could....

The Infrared Zodiak Fisheye Connection

I strive for compatibility between all my camera equipment. Of my primary four shooters - my two Nikon Df cameras, my Nikon F2S 35mm film shooter, and my Pentacon Six TL medium format film camera, I can swap out various components to increase my shooting flexibility. I need my super-big telephoto lens? No problem. One adapter connector and I can use it either on the Pentacon or with the Nikons....

So are the IInspiration ??

Yes, I enjoy professional wrestling. I've enjoyed it since the days of weekend broadcasts on WRGB with heroes like Haystacks Calhoun and Chief Jay Strongbow defeating the likes of Stan Stasiak and Ken Patera. As the years progressed, I've watched professional wrestling in one form or another - whether it was the WWF / WWE "Monday Night Raw" live broadcasts, or late night ECW bloodfests....

Wait, Nicolas Cage is playing a film noir version of Spider-Man?

Follow along with me for a bit. A long time ago, Marvel Comics sold off the movie rights to various film studios to make some much-needed cash. The X-Men and the Fantastic Four were sold to 20th Century Fox, while Spider-Man was parceled off to Columbia Pictures / Sony, the Incredible Hulk found a new home at Universal, etc. Over time, while Marvel and their new parent company Disney tried to gather up all the Marvel properties under one roof - licensing deals with Universal for the Hulk; buying 20th Century Fox outright for the X-Men and Fantastic Four - they haven't had the same success in prying away Spider-Man from Sony....

The wisdom of Obi-Cat Kittyobi

There was a light dusting of snow yesterday morning. I left my home, walked down the porch steps, and saw this. Paw-prints. Now I know where I live. I'm not expecting paw-prints from exotic animals. I'm thinking these are from one of the feral cats that live in the neighborhood. Interesting paw positioning, though ... Nice and clean, no toe-drag or anything....
