The Adventures of Ganef the Squirrel

Ganef the squirrel lived in a tree. The tree was situated near an office park. One day, Ganef scurried along the frozen ground, as he looked for snacks and treats. He already packed plenty of provisions to help him through the winter, now it was time to find whatever morsels some employee left behind. And then he saw it. A suet cake....

The American Basketball Association screwed over the Saratoga Racers.

Sports fan know this pain. It's not a pain of losing in the postseason to a better opponent. It's the pain of something happening in the game that could be easily rectified with an official's proper call. In baseball, the best example of that would be Don Denkinger's "safe" call at first base in the 1985 World Series, when the runner was clearly out by three steps....

Shoot the cactus plants before they die!

Last Saturday, I purchased three Easter cactus plants. The plan? Photograph their brilliant blooms as closely as possible. At least do it before the plants drop dead from too much Chuck-exposure. So between Saturday night and Sunday morning, between battling blooms falling off the stems, and stems falling off the stalks ... I was able to snag some photos, and here they are....

Some Easter Cactus for the weekend

Why in the world did I buy three of these guys? What is wrong with my mental status? Chuck - a man whose gardening skills are so poor, they could kill a DRAWING of a plant? Well ... I bought three of these. I bought a baby Easter cactus. Three of them, to be precise. My goal? Get some up-close photos of the cacti with my Nikkor medical lens, and see if I can capture some beauty....

I love reading satirical comic strips. That included newspaper strips like The Far Side and Caldwell, both of whom were hilarious and thought-provoking. Of course, we’ve moved from newspapers…

K-Chuck Radio: Many Rainy Nights

If you've never experienced the voice and poetry of Shane MacGowan of the Pogues, you've missed so much. Even if you've only heard the Pogues' Christmas song "Fairytale of New York," that's just not enough to really appreciate what MacGowan brought to the musical world. Take, for example, this track. The Pogues song "A Rainy Night in Soho" was originally released by the Pogues in 1986, and exists in two versions - one with a cornet (which MacGowan favored), and one with an oboe (which producer Elvis Costello preferred)....

It’s been 25 gorram years already…

I enjoy good science fiction as much as the next person. Give me a good Star Wars movie or a good Star Trek TV series, and I'm a happy man. Is there a TARDIS nearby? Might there involve a time-traveling telephone booth? (air guitar riff) Then again, some science fiction fandom can border on the - for lack of a better term - obsessive....

More tests with the Infrared Zodiak Fisheye Connection

Last month, I tested out some new modified infrared lenses on a combination of my Nikon Df infrared-modded camera. And the first tests were rather impressive. I could achieve 720nm infrared shots with a fisheye lens that wasn't previously designed for such adventures....

The Saratoga Racers deserve better.

Back in February, with the Albany Patroons on hiatus, and the New York Phoenix' new season not starting yet, my winter basketball minor league experience seemed closed. Then I received a phone call that the Saratoga Racers - a team in the American Basketball Association - needed an announcer for their games. Ah, why not. Help someone out. And it meant a return to the American Basketball Association, a league whose best description I can give is, well, it's basketball....

DePaula Chevrolet must REALLY want me back … but I have a REALLY long memory.

At one time, I used DePaula Chevrolet for all my car maintenance, going all the way back to the 1991 Pontiac 6000 that I took away from my Grandma Betty so that she wouldn't test the theory of a 92-year-old woman driving with cataracts and a valid Massachusetts driver's license. And for the most part, DePaula did a reasonably good job with my cars....

The Saturday Blogroll Recap, March 7 2026

Before we start the recap of the great things occurring on the blogroll, let's all wish a big fat Happy Birthday to someone I've known in blogging for nearly 16 years. That would be Roger Green, he of the "Ramblin' with Roger," as he turns 73 this morning. Go over to his blog today, wish him a happy birthday, and give him the proverbial pinch to grow an inch....
