USF kindly mentioned SMC Research in this tribute to Colin.

Colin P. Silverthorne passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. His passing followed a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. Colin was Professor Emeritus of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences.

We lost an important member of our community a few days ago. Dr. Colin Silverthorne was a yoga student with me for more than 20 years — but he was also so much more to SMC.

When we began training teachers in 2009 and entering the emerging field of Yoga Therapy, we knew that to be taken seriously we needed real research behind our protocols. That kind of research is usually expensive and only accessible through universities.

One Sunday after class, Colin quietly said, “Send me your data and I’ll handle it.”

That’s when I learned our quiet student was actually a Professor of Statistics and a Dean at USF.

With his guidance, we completed three IRB-approved studies showing measurable benefits of our work — something almost unheard of for a small organization. He mentored us through every step and gave us the confidence of knowing our methods were scientifically sound.

When Colin was later diagnosed with Parkinson’s, he continued practicing and even encouraged me to study ways yoga could help others with his condition. He was in class just days before his passing — still breathing, moving, and trusting deeply in the work.

I want you all to know what a generous, brilliant, and kind man he was.
Thank you, Colin. We send you so much love and wish you a happy birthday, today, St. Patrick's Day!

This tribute was written by his family and published in the Marin IJ:
