Mildred R. Mellott
Mildred “Mid” Mellott was born on May 14, 1940, to John S. and Mary E. (Barnes) Mellott, at her beloved home in Fort Loudon, PA. She passed away on 2/14/2026, at age 85, with family by her side, at the Brookview Health Center in Chambersburg. She previously lived at Chambers Pointe Menno Haven and in Greencastle, PA.
Mid was a hard-working multi-talented individual. While she was kind and thoughtful to everyone, she wrote that her greatest love was her nieces and nephews. There is a quote that says, “Children need at least one person in their life who thinks the sun rises and sets on them, who delights in their existence and loves them unconditionally.” Mid was that person for many ofher nieces and nephews, whom she treasured and nurtured as if they were her own children and grandchildren. Mid always made time for the children in her life. She loved to read with and tell stories to them until they fell asleep at night. Summers were filled with trips, camp outs, ball playing, croquet, badminton, fishing and more. She always made sure the children had some spending money and suntan lotion for trips to the beach. Fall meant a back to school shopping trip, where she made sure they had the appropriate clothes for various occasions. She used her skills as a seamstress to make clothes and costumes for the children. Winter was spent making holidays special, attending school events, helping with homework, and having snowy adventures. Spring was a time for new clothes, cleaning off the balcony, and egg dying. At any time of the year, you would find the children exploring Mid’s possessions; nothing was off limits. Mid understood that hands-on experiences were necessary for learning, so you would find them cooking, baking, sewing, crafting, writing, drawing, and painting together. Mid was an exceptional teacher whose techniques, and recipes are still used by family members today. Mid not only taught the children in her family, she also learned from them. As the children grew, Mid eagerly learned dendrology, foreign languages, Legos, music, biology, electronic games, computers, iPads and more.
After graduating from James Buchanan High school in 1958, Mid had a 39 year career and was known as an exceptional presser at J. Schoeneman (Stanley). Later, working as a custodian at Greencastle-Antrim School District, where she made friends with many teachers and staff. She enjoyed volunteering in the Greencastle Head Start classrooms.
Mid is survived by her sisters, Evangeline E. Witmer and Laverne (Carson) Hill, both of Chambersburg; a stepsister, Ninette (Gary) LeGates of Westminster, MD; her niece, Virginia White and nephew Donald G. “Buck” (Deborah Kay) Witmer, Jr., both of Greencastle; grandnephews, Robert K.
