The program incorporates the quintessential values of the liberal arts education: a community of scholars who come together to read important and challenging classic and contemporary works which range broadly in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences; who are interested in sharing their thinking with colleagues in a small seminar setting in interdisciplinary contexts; and who engage in intensive writing which culminates in the preparation and defense of a senior thesis in their fields of specialization.

Ryan writes: “My research explores how the Southern regions in the U.S., especially urban and low-income communities, experience climate gentrification and environmental justice at disproportionately high rates. I analyze the impact and risks of climate disasters and how policies that are meant to improve resilience and promote equal disaster relief can contribute to the systemic marginalization of vulnerable residents, which is rooted in redlining. Ben writes: “While we know microplastics have made themselves known in almost all areas of the body including the brain, we know little to none about their impacts on human health. Considering the disproportionate exposure chemicals that leach from microplastics have on society, including bisphenols, PFAS, and phthalates, I am attempting to provide insight into the actual impacts of the microplastics themselves. I am planning on doing so in the lab by using the gut microbiome model, using E. coli as a proxy for human health by exposing the bacteria to polystyrene microplastics and observing trends in biofilm formation and subsequent antibiotic resistance.” 📚🦉
