❄️
With a little over 24 hours before the snow starts to fly, you still have time to get yourself prepared for it! This is a long post, but full of information to help keep you safe.
First and foremost, weather forecasts are not always 💯accurate. There are always fluctuations. Please don't get hung up on exact totals, because regardless of how many inches of snow we get, this storm will have major impacts for us this weekend into next week. It will be windy and VERY cold!
PLEASE make plans now to stay at home from late Saturday and all day on Sunday. Traveling will be very difficult and extremely hazardous! Never call 911 to ask about road conditions. Use 511 for that information. You can also follow INDOT East Central for State road conditions and plow cameras.
If you absolutely have to be out driving, make sure you are prepared! Always wear your seat belt. Your fuel tank should be full, or battery fully charged before you leave. Ensure your windshield washer fluid tank is also full. Share your planned route with a family member or friend and be sure to check in with them when you arrive at your destination. Never use portable electronic devices while you are driving.
If you are driving and get stuck or run off of the roadway, know that it may take a long time for help to arrive to you. Our local towing companies will be very busy. Please also remember that the wrecker drivers have to have breaks after working for so many hours, so you may be on your own for a while. Stay inside your vehicle and keep your seat belt on. This will help protect you if your car gets struck by another.
Be sure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes the following:
1. Extra warm clothes and blankets
2. Warm hat, gloves and coat
3. Water and snacks for several hours
4. Portable electronic device charger and cables
5. A small shovel to help you get out, if you can
6. Jumper cables or portable battery jump starter
7. Ice/Snow scraper
8. First Aid Kit
Prepare your home for the storm.
Thanks to the diligent work of our Greenfield Power and Light employees, the power grid inside the City of Greenfield is pretty stable. However, utility poles get struck by vehicles, tree limbs fall on power lines and fury critters getting too close to a transformer can all result in extended power outages. If you have them, make sure portable battery powered devices are charged. NEVER use a natural gas stove to heat your home or use a propane heater inside your home. These can all lead to carbon monoxide poisoning and possibly death. Be careful when using candles for light, ensuring they are far away from anything that can burn.
The Greenfield Street Department employees will be out working throughout this storm to keep our roadways as clean as possible. They also require breaks. They will also be treating the roads after they are clear of snow, but salt doesn't work so well in really cold temps, like what is expected through all of next week. Expect the roads to be slippery and hazardous. Take your time, leave extra room for other traffic and don't crowd snow plows. When they are throwing snow, it makes it very hard for the driver to see behind and beside them in their mirrors.
Always be ready! We will be here if you need us. Stay Safe and check on your older family, friends and neighbors throughout this storm and extremely cold temperatures next week.
