PHASE 5 & 6 | FOUNDATION TRAINING
This is a movement called the Lateral Hinge and it is from Phase 5 of . In phase 5 we begin to work on full body rotational patterns that emphasize the hip, doing the majority of the work, in the previous phases we have done a ton of hip centered work, but here we start to add more layers to it and more challenge. So many of us have limits in the range of motion of the pelvis and hip joints, and it puts pressures into the spine instead of dispersing the load evenly throughout the whole body, so we develop spinal issues, joint compression pain, and nerve ouchiness that are all really hip issues. This phase gets the rotational ability of the hips, and really all the different movements the hips can do, to be the best they can possibly be. This phase addresses asymmetries of the body and cross patterns really well. As well as giving us incredible power and force output in our cross patterns like swinging a gulf club or tennis racket, paddling, throwing... anything that requires rotation that we can get the full body to participate in it.

I have a pattern in my body that can cause pain in my right hip, it’s the kind of pain where I start thinking I need hip surgery and can get freaked out by it. (anxiety-googling) It is actually from me getting twisted up. Sometimes you are not injured, you are just twisted! Phase 5 is all about winding and unwinding and it totally cures my hip thing! Which is astonishing because when it gets going it feels like, “uh oh, this is the end...” lol!!

Phase 6 builds on this stuff and is incredibly challenging it takes all these patterns and combines them with other work that we have done and we get into these compound movement patterns with layers of the work together and phew!

PHASE 7 SPRING COURSE!
In this course, we will work our way from phase 1 all the way through phase 6. This is a great class for a student who has done all 6 phases of but wants to keep learning, growing and studying. It’s also a great class for someone who has not been in class for awhile, but would like to join back in because it’s not going to be all advanced work the entire time. We will progressively build our way towards the compound movement patterns that require more endurance and skill. This is also a good class for someone who has completed phases one through 4 and could do one-on-one time with me before we get to week five and six where we start to dive into the more advanced material. We can use the one-on-one time that is included in the course to get you up to speed and introduce you to the phase 5 and 6 movement patterns, then you will be ready to work with the group as we get to those more advanced classes near the end of the course.

DAY: TUESDAYS
TIME: 9:30 - 10:45 AM
DATES: APR 21 - JUN 9
COST: $510

THE STANDING INTERNAL LEG TRACE:
You are balancing on one leg and you put your heel on the shin of the standing leg and you trace your heel up to the knee and back down to the ankle multiple times. You have to keep your knee pulling across the midline in an internal rotation as you do it.

THIS MOVEMENT PATTERN TAUGHT ME TWO MIND OPENING THINGS:
First, that tight iliotibial bands will change quickly and drastically when you strengthen their opposing muscle group of the adductors!! Tight iliotibial bands are a symptom!! The stronger the adductors on the inner thighs get, the more supple and elongated the IT bands get!

Second, it taught me about balance, about how to pull towards center, towards the midline, when losing balance. When you are about to fall, we do this really smart thing and reach our arms and legs out and attempt to counter balance our way back to stop ourselves from toppling over. In this pose, the challenge is to, when you feel that tiny earthquake of balance starting to wobble, to pull towards the midline, you press your bottom leg shin into the heel, you press the heel back into the shin, you squeeze the knee towards the midline, you reach the top of your head to a single star in the sky, you take your attention to the midline and try to hug towards it, not only teaching your body to find center, but also getting a faster reaction to the wobbles to hug towards center and it really works!! I especially love doing this pose while balancing on something!

Every movement pattern of Foundation Training training teaches something that has transformed the way that I understand the body and how it works.

HARD TO HOLD YOURSELF UP:
I remember being in my late 20’s with a very dedicated and inspired Iyengar yoga practice that I had been working at for nearly a decade and sitting with an older friend / sometimes mentor of mine who was a Feldenkrais practitioner and telling him how much work it was to hold myself up and he looked at me with curiosity and emphasis, saying, “It shouldn’t be hard to hold yourself up!?”

This is the Woodpecker and it is a single leg hinge under tension, loading the posterior chain eccentrically! Wahoo! People often describe a deep, lengthened glute engagement, feeling their hamstrings and lower back turning on together / actually working and working-together, and a total back body wake up that feels like support turning on. You might feel a balance challenge, trembling in the front leg, a lengthened spine, a back that is way less compressed, and taller after! It is a deep and integrated effort rather than an isolated burn that shifts support out from the joints into larger muscle groups and muscle chains so the joints can float in a sea of reinforcement.

wakes up muscles that we don’t even know we have and makes holding yourself up much more effortless. It makes your back feel supported and reorganizes our system so that our posture comes alive.

I was so stoked to find a practice that gave me that feeling that my friend woke me up to the possibility of finding!

WOODPECKER ROTATION:
This pose is extraordinarily difficult and when I teach it, people often feel anger come up. It lengthens the glutes, trains the Iliotibial Band in a long position which helps it become supple, and it works the whole outside of the shin down to the foot. It can sometimes instantly cure sciatica, but usually it takes some practice to have changes happen. It makes space for the sciatic nerve and space for the sacroiliac joint, returns a wonderful amount of rotation to the hip joint and can really help free up the knees from glutes that had been clenching and a too tight and hard IT band. This movement will change the way you walk and run to a pattern that makes your back and hips and knees feel good and alive. Because this is you are also strengthening the posterior chain, our backs “core” and shock / strut / antigravity muscles. And it is fully integrated facially from head to toe making the opening in the hips actually a full body movement that creates changes through the torso, shoulders and neck. AND you are breathing in a way that opens the whole system up simultaneously. If I look at it from a Chinese Medicine lens, I see it working the Gall Bladder channel which is part of the wood element and the emotion of the wood element is anger, the anger of “this box is too small! Break it!! I’m trying to f****ing grow here!!” When new students come to class I make sure to tell them how much emotion will come up through working with our posture. There is a reason we hold ourselves the way that we do. When doing foundation training we really disrupt all of that and I find it to be like… “damn!! And freedom!!”

UPRIGHT POSTURE THROUGH AGING:
Our bodies can get into some postures that feel like a prison. I, personally had started to develop a hump on my upper back, right under my neck, the top of the thoracic, T1-T3. I was in my late 20’s and working a desk job. I was actually teaching and practicing Iyengar yoga daily back then. But it wasn’t enough to counter the effects of sitting and me just not knowing how to hold myself and getting totally out of balance. I remember telling my osteopath and she said this was called an “old age hump” in osteopathy. I was mortified by that. The hump went away within weeks of me starting to practice and I have seen the same thing happen for lots of my students!

I still get caught in hunchy positions from long days of office work or sleeping in a weird fetal ball, but Foundation Training reverses it easily and shocks me at how profound of a shift it can create. Thank goodness.

For me, how I feel in my body directly affects me emotionally and psychologically. There is a huge impact on me if my posture starts to get stuck and contracted and hunchy. Doing Foundation Training makes me feel physically and emotionally capable. And I do feel my inner elder thanking me. She is basically throwing a party about it. 🎉👵🏼👯

UPCOMING SPRING FOUNDATION TRAINING COURSES!
It has been seven years since this photo was taken, and I am still teaching Foundation Training. I think I teach Foundation Training partly from my own grief that comes from the traumas I have had within the medical system, from being hurt and vulnerable and being shuttled into a system that moves fast, doesn’t listen, doesn’t educate, doesn’t treat you with care, just finishes a job and then shoots you out the other end and, likely, hurts you more in the process. In my classes, I educate a lot about the anatomy and the why & the how of what we are doing, not just me giving instructions and then you following along as if it’s a “Simon Says” routine. I try to empower each and every student with knowledge about themselves and how the body works so that they know what they’re feeling and what they’re looking for and how to create that in their bodies and why they would want to create that. I think I secretly have a goal that my students get enough education about their bodies that they can talk with their doctor or physical therapist and feel like they know what they are talking about and feel empowered to work as a team and even feel equal enough to not just blindly take orders, but to know what is right for them and what isn’t and be able to make empowered decisions in those situations. I want everyone to be an expert on their own body and to have the skills that they need in order to help themselves feel better and to take care of themselves, no matter what challenges life gives them.
