UPRIGHT POSTURE THROUGH AGING:
Our bodies can get into some postures that feel like a prison. I, personally had started to develop a hump on my upper back, right under my neck, the top of the thoracic, T1-T3. I was in my late 20’s and working a desk job. I was actually teaching and practicing Iyengar yoga daily back then. But it wasn’t enough to counter the effects of sitting and me just not knowing how to hold myself and getting totally out of balance. I remember telling my osteopath and she said this was called an “old age hump” in osteopathy. I was mortified by that. The hump went away within weeks of me starting to practice and I have seen the same thing happen for lots of my students!

I still get caught in hunchy positions from long days of office work or sleeping in a weird fetal ball, but Foundation Training reverses it easily and shocks me at how profound of a shift it can create. Thank goodness.

For me, how I feel in my body directly affects me emotionally and psychologically. There is a huge impact on me if my posture starts to get stuck and contracted and hunchy. Doing Foundation Training makes me feel physically and emotionally capable. And I do feel my inner elder thanking me. She is basically throwing a party about it. 🎉👵🏼👯

UPCOMING SPRING FOUNDATION TRAINING COURSES!
It has been seven years since this photo was taken, and I am still teaching Foundation Training. I think I teach Foundation Training partly from my own grief that comes from the traumas I have had within the medical system, from being hurt and vulnerable and being shuttled into a system that moves fast, doesn’t listen, doesn’t educate, doesn’t treat you with care, just finishes a job and then shoots you out the other end and, likely, hurts you more in the process. In my classes, I educate a lot about the anatomy and the why & the how of what we are doing, not just me giving instructions and then you following along as if it’s a “Simon Says” routine. I try to empower each and every student with knowledge about themselves and how the body works so that they know what they’re feeling and what they’re looking for and how to create that in their bodies and why they would want to create that. I think I secretly have a goal that my students get enough education about their bodies that they can talk with their doctor or physical therapist and feel like they know what they are talking about and feel empowered to work as a team and even feel equal enough to not just blindly take orders, but to know what is right for them and what isn’t and be able to make empowered decisions in those situations. I want everyone to be an expert on their own body and to have the skills that they need in order to help themselves feel better and to take care of themselves, no matter what challenges life gives them.

In the initial session I will teach you two body based / somatic nervous system regulation practices that we’ll do prior to the hands-on part. These practices usher in the parasympathetic state. When we are in the sympathetic state of the nervous system, the body puts off healing processes, it instead “holds” and “protects.” When we are in a parasympathetic state the body does healing processes. Nearly everyone gets an incredible amount of insight from these processes and experiences a shift in the body, moving from holding and protecting or a sense of being fragmented in parts and pieces —> to warmth and tingles, a flow and a wholeness coming in, that shift from “hold & protect” to “healing processes starting” is palpable, and begins to happen just with these two practices we will start with. I really value these because they open the doorway for quite a lot to happen and I have found that they can amplify the treatment!

WHAT’S THE HARDEST THING ABOUT FOUNDATION TRAINING? One of the biggest hidden challenges I see in my classes isn’t doing the practice or learning it, even though both are hard. The struggle isn’t there because we’re incapable. It’s because self-criticism shows up faster than learning and faster than the body has time to adapt from the practice.

When self-criticism comes in, cues can start to land as judgment instead of support. Grief and frustration then overwhelm the system, which makes learning much harder. For me, shame can turn something into a crisis instead of a puzzle to be explored.

I often expect the process to move faster than it does. When it doesn’t, the self-critical part steps forward, helped along by a culture that wants everything fast, productive, and measurable, even though emotional, biological, healing, and learning processes don’t really work that way.

This makes me curious about the mechanism of that moment.

If we pause the thinking and notice what’s happening in the body with those thoughts, there can be sensations like tension in the forehead or around the cranium, restriction in the throat, tightening in the chest, shallow breath, a sinking feeling in the belly, tension around the sacrum.

From an IFS lens, I wonder if this is a protector or manager part stepping forward quickly, trying to prevent something from getting worse. What is this part trying to do? What is it protecting?

Is there a younger part underneath that learned early that mistakes brought criticism, took away things that were important or disconnection? In a class, does the body experience cues as a relational moment, not just a technical one?

From an attachment perspective, learning in front of others can activate old patterns — hyper-vigilance, striving, collapse, shutting down — especially if mistakes once meant losing safety or connection.

None of this feels like pathology to me.
It feels like intelligence. Parts doing their best to keep connection intact. If we are awake to this process we can meet very tender places in ourselves. The most important things, the things that organize our posture, our relationships & our life. This is the potential of practice.

FOUNDATION TRAINING | WHO IS IT FOR?
Foundation Training is one of the most powerful accessory practices for bringing the body toward its full potential.

• Athletes who want to improve performance

• Anyone with injuries or pain: back pain, SI joint pain, herniated or bulging discs, spondylitis, spondylolisthesis, sciatica, scoliosis, hip, knee, shoulder or neck pain, nerve pain, plantar fasciitis, rib injuries, or difficulty breathing fully

• Anyone with tension, limited range of motion, hyper-mobility (including EDS), or lack of mobility

• Office workers dealing with pain from sitting and computer work

• Those experiencing degeneration or limitation with aging

• Moms ready to re-center and strengthen their body after pregnancy

• Movement practitioners of all kinds: Yoga, Dance, Martial Arts, Climbing, Cycling, CrossFit, Running, Skiing, Boxing, and teachers wanting to feel the body’s inherent strength and suppleness come online daily

• Physical laborers (farmers, gardeners, builders, construction workers) who want movement patterns that build the body up instead of breaking it down and want to finish their day feeling good

• Bodyworkers, therapists, chiropractors, PTs, OTs, and doctors who want practical tools their clients can use

• Anyone wanting greater breath capacity, embodiment, and a deeper relationship to their anatomy

And truly… everyone.

YOU WILL LEARN:

• To see your body as a web of interrelated parts, rather than isolated “good” or “bad” pieces — and how this web shifts, tightens, compensates, and can be guided back toward being supple, buoyant, balanced, and healthy.

• To understand where symptoms come from, their origin, how imbalances arise, and how to work with them skillfully rather than suppressing or fighting them.

• To recognize habitual patterns of posture, breath, and movement that create unnecessary stress and strain, compromising joints, weakening muscles, and restricting organ function, and to learn how to move and breathe in ways that feel freer, lighter, and more easeful, creating space, joint lubrication, integrated strength, and optimal physiological expression.

• Somatosensation: the skill of sensing and translating symptoms, building a more complete body map so sensation can inform intelligent, responsive action.

• How to retrain movement patterns that slowly break the body down into ones that actively build the body up.

• How to build strength in weak or under-supported places while creating large, integrated movement patterns that protect joints and spine, support organs, nerves, and lymphatic flow, and orient the head and neck to support the brainstem, cranial nerves, and vagus nerve.

• How to carry these patterns into daily life. Foundation Training is functional and integrative, an adjunct practice designed to help your body feel and perform better in whatever your life and heart call you toward.
