❓ What does a speech evaluation consist of? ⁣

⭐️ Speech and language evaluations typically consist of standardized assessments, clinical observations, and parent/caregiver input in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the child’s communication skills. Most evaluations are completed within 1-2 hours. Following the evaluation, the parent receives a formal written report that includes results, diagnoses, and treatment recommendations. This report is reviewed with the parent and opportunities to ask questions are given. If the parent chooses to pursue treatment, we will create a plan of care that includes your child's goals and treatment plan (frequency and duration of services). ⁣

❓ Are my child’s school speech services enough? ⁣

⭐️ I think one of the most important things to know is that a school based SLP really can’t tell you whether or not your child also needs private services. They are fully credentialed to do so, however, their role as a school SLP prevents them from answering questions outside of educational need because they are instructed by school districts not to. Why? Because if the school indicates that something outside of the IEP is necessary, they can be liable to pay for it. So you probably won’t get a “yes” or “no” to this question, and if you do, we recommend a second outside opinion from someone outside the school system. School-based SLPs are great, don’t get me wrong! I’ve been one for years. However, the recommendations they are allowed to make are restricted to the educational setting ONLY. Many times they are sitting there thinking, “yes, I wish you would also pursue private services to support them outside of school.” Children and families have many needs beyond their education, after all. ⁣

Looking for that outside opinion? Give us a call! We also provide consultative services for parents navigating the IEP and special education process. We’d love to support you so you don’t have to go it alone 🌳❤️⁣

❓Can’t I get free speech therapy through the schools? ⁣

⭐️ School-based speech therapy differs notably from private services in many ways. One of the primary differences is that school speech is provided to children who are eligible for special education and have an IEP. There must be an adverse educational impact, meaning that the child’s communication negatively influences their learning is some way. There are many children who are not eligible for school services, but will qualify in a private setting! Children can also receive both! More details above 👆🏻⁣

❓🕰 When should a child be able to say sounds correctly? 👧🏽🗣👄⁣

👉🏼 90% of English-speaking children can produce the following sounds correctly by the end of age:⁣

2️⃣ b, n, m, p, h, w, d⁣
3️⃣ g, k, f, t, ng, y⁣
4️⃣ v, j, s, ch, l, sh, z⁣
5️⃣ r, voiced th (i.e., “that,” “they”)⁣
6️⃣ voiceless th (i.e., “think,” “thank”)⁣

Why does this matter? 🤔⁣

👉🏼 Articulation disorders can impact children in many ways, including their social-emotional development, functional communication and clarity of speech, reading and writing development, academic performance, future vocational opportunities, and more. The earlier these errors are addressed, the less habitual they have become, often making them easier to correct. ⁣

🚫 Don’t wait and see! Early intervention in key 🔑⁣

❓Do you accept insurance? ⁣

👉🏼 We are currently out-of-network with insurance providers and are private pay only. However, we will happily provide you with a Superbill that can be submitted to your insurance company for possible reimbursement for some or all of your therapy costs. ⁣

The client is responsible for submitting Superbills to their own insurance company as The Grove Speech Center does not bill insurance directly at this time. In addition, the majority of speech and language therapy services can be paid for using your flexible spending account (FSA) or healthcare savings account (HSA) if you have these benefits. ⁣

We recommend contacting your insurance company or benefits department directly with questions and to confirm your benefits. ⁣

We hope to enroll as an in-network provider with major insurance companies in the future. Looking for yours? Send us a message! ⁣

We currently have no wait list and are accepting new patients! Get in touch today 👇🏼⁣

LATE TALKERS AND SCHOOL READINESS 🗣🍎✏️⁣

Research has shown that late talkers at age 2 have 3x the risk of having low vocabularies at age 4⁣.

A low vocabulary at age 4 more than triples the odds of low reading and math scores in kindergarten. ⁣

Don’t “wait and see!” 🚫 Early intervention is key 🔑⁣
