Focus on Nkayi in Congo Brazzaville

Head for Nkayi Nkayi is the main city of the region of Bouenza, the capital of which is Madingou, in the southwest of the Republic of Congo🇨🇬, about 250 kilometers from the capital Brazzaville. The city of Nkayi is made up of two (2) districts: • Mouana-nto (1st district) • Soulouka (2nd arrondissement) Located halfway through the Congo-Ocean Railway (CFCO), Nkayi is one of the largest agro-industrial centers in the country thanks to its sugar company, S.A.R.I.S, a subsidiary of the French group SOMDIAA. The city was born in 1933 with the work of colonist Ottino who first created a starch factory (tapioca), then an oil mill in 1938. Subsequently, the SIAN or Industrial and Agricultural Society of Niari d'Ottino will be taken over by the groups De Wulf and Vilgrain and we will move on to the cultivation of sugar cane, the first production of which dates back to 1957 with 550 tonnes. The city first bore the name of Jacob who was a pioneer of colonization and this name was attributed to the city in 1933 by Governor Antonneti who confirmed it again in 1934. Until 1975, the city thus bore the name of Jacob; then from 1975 to the present day, the city is called Nkayi. The fourth largest city in the country, Nkayi is booming due in particular to the rural exodus. Its population is estimated at around 71,620 people at the 2007 census.
