Wellbutrin/bupropion is an amazing medication, but we do not typically recommend it for anxiety disorders. It is approved to treat Depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and Smoking Cessation. Off-label, we use it often for ADHD treatment. The medication is often described as “energizing,” which is sometimes too activating for folks with anxiety disorders. In some cases it can worsen anxiety symptoms or cause trouble sleeping.

Finding the right psychiatric medications can be complicated and frustrating. Around 40-50% of individuals with ADHD are estimated to also have an anxiety disorder. What does this mean for medications?

Most of the medications we use for ADHD can worsen anxiety, causing symptoms like racing thoughts and insomnia. If we treat anxiety without treating ADHD, many people lose the adrenaline and cortisol that was actually helping them function. They suddenly feel unproductive and unmotivated.
