A loving tribute from our Executive Director and CEO, Jodi Lorenzo, for our friend Janet Ward Black:

“Be Batman.” - Janet Ward Black

You will read a lot about this woman in the coming weeks — about her time as a former Miss North Carolina, her deep spirituality and love of God, and her extraordinary career as a lawyer. You’ll hear about how she started her own firm, built a legacy of excellence, and received countless accolades — including her induction into the North Carolina Bar Association’s 2025 Legal Practice Hall of Fame on October 17, 2025.

Janet Ward Black was — and will always be — a trailblazer.
But what has always resonated most with me about Janet Ward Black is her quiet strength. She was Batman. Masked and unrecognizable, yet leading change. She believed in giving back to her community and in a world where true justice is served by taking care of one another.

In 2018, she inspired me deeply when she walked out on stage at the Community Foundation’s Women to Women Luncheon dressed as Batman. She believed that we can all stand for justice in small and meaningful ways. As she reminded us that day, “To be a hero in this world, you do not need a cape or a mask — because each of us has the chance to step in and change the moment in front of us.”

“A hero can be anyone — even someone as simple and reassuring as putting a coat on a young boy’s shoulders to let him know the world hasn’t ended.” — Batman

After that, I’d often write “Hey Batman!” in notes and texts to her — small thank-yous for the constant reminder to do good, quietly and meaningfully.

Rest in peace, Ms. Batman. 🦇

Thank you for being simply trailblazingly you.

This is Regina. At 16, she was vibrant, full of laughter, promise and dreams. Soon after, a mental health crisis changed the course of her life. The photo on the right was taken on her 42nd birthday, just weeks before she died. The 25 years between these two pictures tell a profound story of struggle, but also of strength, love, and perseverance.

Through Sanctuary House, Regina found friends, a sense of belonging, and even a job. These were some of her most stable and joyful years, and they remind us why safe, supportive spaces matter so deeply.

By supporting , you honor her life and help others living with mental illness find the safety, support, and purpose they deserve.
