We celebrate the wonderful life of Rebecca B. Humphrey Nee Rebecca Coulter Barclay. Rebecca was a descendant of both early Swiss-German and Scotch-Irish settlers of western Pennsylvania. Many of those having crossed the mountains and settled in Bedford and Westmoreland Counties in the period 1780-1820. Her paternal ancestors included Col. Hugh Barclay, an early Ranger on the Frontiers of Bedford; Alexander Johnston, an early surveyor and builder of Kingston House by the Loyalhanna Dam in 1815; and Thomas Johnston Barclay, founder of the Barclay Bank in Greensburg in 1854 (later Barclay-Westmoreland Trust Company). She was also the last descendant living in Greensburg of the early Coulter family, which settled here prior to 1790. These ancestors included Eli Coulter and his grandson General Richard Coulter, who served in both the Mexican and Civil Wars. Other prominent Greensburg ancestral families included the Alexanders and Bradys of Cumberland County, Eichers, Glunts, Kuhns, Marchands, and Weltys. Rebecca's early schooling included the Fourth Ward in Greensburg, Winchester-Thurston in Pittsburgh, and the Westover School in Connecticut. She followed her mother by enrolling in Smith College in Northampton, MA, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in 1948. In college she developed a deep love of science and the natural world after having spent a good deal of her senior year studying fruit flies. That curiosity about wildlife and love of animals remained a driving force throughout her life. Becca was married to Arthur F. Humphrey Jr. in 1948. They moved to a small farm on the outskirts of town that had once been the country seat of early Greensburg Judge John Young and his Clopper descendants. There they became the parents of three adopted children. Rebecca was a member of the Friday Club, Pike Run Country Club, and Rolling Rock Club, as well as the Garden Club of Allegheny County for many years. Her love of travel led her to many international adventures, with a particular fondness for trips to the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as the island of South Georgia. She claimed to be happiest when visiting very cold climes. Rebecca was a steadfast contributor to a host of wildlife charities.

We celebrate the wonderful life of Lois Ann Denning. She was a graduate of Penn Joint High School and went on to wear many hats throughout her extensive career. Most recently, she spent over ten years as head bank teller at First National Bank in Greensburg. She was beloved by her colleagues and customers, always willing to go the extra mile to help someone in need. She cared deeply about sharing and celebrating her Slovenian culture, as Treasurer of the Westmoreland County Federation of SNPJ Lodges. Lois was known and loved by many for her tremendous strength, fun-loving spirit, joyful presence, and caring nature. An ovarian and breast cancer survivor, she was passionate about helping other patients. She annually dedicated her time and energy to raising funds directly supporting local cancer patients by organizing and hosting the Pretty in Pink Polka Dance for the last 14 years. She profoundly touched countless lives, leaving a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her. When she wasn’t spending time helping others, she enjoyed traveling to visit friends, bringing loved ones together in times of celebration, hosting and attending too many polka dances to count, and never passing up a trip to the casino. Lois took immense pride in raising her two girls. Her bright light will shine on through each of them. Lois felt blessed to have found love and companionship in both Joe and Gary across different seasons of life. Although she may be on a different dance floor, we know in our hearts that she is continuing to polka the night away.

We celebrate the wonderful life of Donna Jean (Zwick) Davis. Donna was a graduate of Shade High School and held a B.A. in Early Childhood Education from Juniata College. While attending Juniata College she met her husband of 62 years, Donald L. Davis by whom she is survived. Donna went on to receive her Master of Library Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Her love of teaching spanned a career of over 30 years in public education. She started her career as an elementary school teacher in the Shaler Area School District. Upon completing her Master’s degree she was hired by North Hills School District as elementary librarian. After a brief service with the Greensburg-Salem School District, she spent her last 24 years in public education as Senior High Librarian for the Greater Latrobe School District. After her retirement from the public schools, she spent 16 years as a reference and early childhood librarian for the Greensburg-Hempfield Area Library. Miss Donna, as many called her, found great joy in encouraging a love of books in young children, and the adults who sought her knowledge and assistance. It was during this time, and after her second retirement, that she and her husband fulfilled their travel dreams. Chautauqua Institution in New York was one of her particular favorites and she attended the summer season for over 30 years. She and her husband became members of the board at the Lutheran House at Chautauqua and were honored in 2018 with their Outstanding Service Award for their time and dedication to the house. She also spent time in all 50 states, Canada and Europe. Travel provided fun and additional knowledge, making her a whiz at trivia games and encouraging her to read even more about History, Biography and adventure. Donna was a member of Zion’s Lutheran Church and an active participant in church life. She was proud to have served as the first lay President of church Council and as a WELCA leader. She was President of the Southwestern Synod WELCA board and served on the national board as well. While her daughters were active with the International Order of Job’s Daughters, Donna was an active parental participant as well. She headed many chairs and rose to become Bethel Guardian for Bethel #3 in Greensburg. She also served on the Pennsylvania Grand Guardian Council, IOJD. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women and worked extensively on their annual Book Sale and their Math and Science workshops. After the local chapter closed she still attended their Carpe Diem book club.
