Dear friends of Pittsburgh East Animal Hospital,

As some of you may know, my days at Pittsburgh East Animal Hospital are coming to a close.
This has been a bittersweet decision for me, but I am leaving to pursue my dream of practice
ownership. I am thankful for all that I have learned from Drs. Pope, Dinger, and Abt over the
past six and a half years. Additionally, I have enjoyed getting to know all of my colleagues,
patients, and clients. I will miss you all dearly. Thank you for everything.

Sincerely,
Dr. Rebecca Caldwell

It’s a beautiful day here at PEAH!! We hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 victims of the 9/11 attacks and the many heroes, including those with four legs, that were first responders and rescuers. More than 300 dogs were part of the search and rescue teams, saving many lives.

This picture is of Riley, a Golden Retriever, from FEMA Type II Pennsylvania Task Force I. Riley's handler was Chris Selfridge. Riley was a trained rescue dog on a mission to search the top of what was left of the north tower.

We salute the many Veterinarians who were stationed at the site to help care for these dogs. Working 12-hour shifts on the pile, the dogs needed to have their paw pads, eyes and nose cleaned often.

Heartbreaking.

This is why we require all adopters give their pets monthly heartworm prevention. We require it not just when someone applies to adopt, but require you prove a history of giving prevention.

ONE mosquito bite started this. ONE. Monthly heartworm prevention is necessary 12 months a year. It takes one infected mosquito bite to cause this. It can happen inside your house or on a 5 minute potty break.

Monthly prevention is the only way to stop this from happening!!

UPDATE 6/14/22: We recognize this post has gotten a lot of attention, shares and comments - which is great! However, with that said, a lot of incorrect and/or harmfully false information about heartworms is being shared as factual in the comment thread.

For more information about what kind of parasite heartworms are, how they are contracted (through mosquitos), why humans don't get heartworms, and why it's important to keep your dog on prevention year-round, please visit: https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/animal-health-literacy/keep-worms-out-your-pets-heart-facts-about-heartworm-disease #:~:text=Heartworms%20are%20only%20transmitted%20by,before%20they%20become%20adult%20worms.

This week we are celebrating our amazing Client Care Representative staff!

Melinda, Jennifer, Christian, and April dedicate their days to providing the very best service for our clients and their pets. They truly take the time to listen and understand each of their needs, while organizing, strategizing, and ensuring the day runs smoothly. They are the ultimate chaos coordinators, and they surely have one of the most difficult positions in our field. They face various scheduling and last minute conflicts daily and manage to pull it all off with grace and can handle anything the day throws at them.
This week and every day, we appreciate you all. Thank you for all that you do and continue to do for our practice, clients and most of all our patients! 🐶🐱🐾💙
