When Attention Concerns Don’t Fully Add 🆙

Many parents worry when their child struggles with focus, behavior, or learning.

It’s important to remember that attention is not a single skill.

Recent research continues to show that focus and behavior can be influenced by sleep quality, neurodevelopmental differences, learning processing demands, and emotional regulation.

🧠 Autism and ADHD traits may overlap biologically, which helps explain why symptoms can sometimes look similar even when the underlying mechanisms are different.

Stop guessing and Start Understanding. Weekly insights:

Did you know sleep deprivation in children can mimic ADHD?

Research has shown that insufficient sleep can impair sustained attention, behavioral inhibition, and executive functioning — the same domains we assess when evaluating for ADHD.

A review published in Sleep highlights how cumulative sleep loss can produce neurobehavioral deficits that closely resemble core ADHD symptoms.

That’s why in a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation, sleep history matters.

Before assuming ADHD, we want to ask:
• How many hours is the child sleeping?
• Is sleep consistent?
• Are there signs of sleep disruption?

Sometimes improving sleep significantly reduces attention concerns.
Sometimes ADHD is still present.
But we don’t want to miss something modifiable.
