Meet our Medical Director! 👋

Dr. Trever Krehbiel is a board-certified mental health specialist who has been practicing in the Wichita, Kansas area since completing his psychiatry residency at The University of Kansas in 2011. He earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2007 and returned home to Wichita to raise his family and serve the community he loves.

In addition to running his private practice, Dr. Krehbiel has been deeply involved in supporting rural mental health centers across the region. He has served as our Medical Director since 2019, where his experience, leadership, and dedication to patient care make a meaningful impact every day.

Iroquois Center for Human Development, Inc. is hiring a Clinical Director. To potential candidates, I want you to hear why I choose to be a part of the Iroquois Center. If you or someone you know is interested, they can reach out to Jon Rosell at Moran Company: https://lnkd.in/gGafhyRT

I came to the Iroquois Center from a much larger mental health system and a much larger community. To some extent, I came disillusioned, frustrated and unsure if I wanted to continue to be a part of the CCBHC system. What I found here was something I did not expect. I found renewed purpose, hope, and a true calling to service.

Working in a rural and frontier community comes with real challenges. Access to care can be limited. Resources are fewer. Distances are long. But for those called to this work, those challenges are exactly what give it meaning. Here, showing up matters. Leadership matters. The impact of care is immediate and deeply human.

This region knows resilience. Much of this area was shaped by the devastation of the Greensburg tornado in 2007, and the people across these counties continue to move forward with strength and determination. That resilience shows up every day in the individuals we serve and in the nearly fifty dedicated team members who choose to serve this community with heart, compassion, and purpose.

Our team shows up each day committed to providing more and better care. They have embraced innovation, including CCBHC, and continue to raise the standard for what rural behavioral health can and should be. I am continually inspired by their commitment to their neighbors and to one another. They push me, they question me, they challenge me and I am better for it.

And it does not hurt that this is some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen. Wide open prairies and grasslands filled with wildlife and livestock offer pristine views that remind you why community matters.

This is why I work here. And as we continue to grow, we are looking for a Clinical Director who feels that same pull toward service, leadership, and meaningful impact in a resilient and connected community.

Stephen O’Neill, LSCSW, MBA
Executive Director

📢Local Agencies Collaborate to Strengthen Mental Health Crisis Response in Comanche County
Mental health professionals from the Iroquois Center for Human Development, along with representatives from Comanche County Emergency Medical Services, the Sheriff’s Office, and the county’s critical access hospital, recently participated in a national policy academy hosted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) with the goal of strengthening local crisis care systems.

The Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) Rural Crisis Policy Mapping Academy, held July 22–24, 2025, in the Washington, D.C. area, brought together multidisciplinary teams from rural, remote, and tribal communities across the United States. The academy focused on helping communities develop strategic action plans to expand access to behavioral health crisis services—an increasingly critical need in underserved regions.

Iroquois Center was selected to participate and build a team, based on the strength of its ongoing work to build behavioral health capacity and implement crisis services in a rural setting, consistent with CCBHC program criteria. That recognition helped catalyze a broader local effort in Comanche County to enhance coordination among behavioral health providers and emergency responders.
As a result of the academy, a new mental health emergency services group has been formed in Comanche County. The collaborative now includes Iroquois Center’s mental health crisis staff alongside local law enforcement, EMS personnel, 911 dispatch, and Comanche County Hospital medical staff. The group is focused on improving communication, shared protocols, and coordinated response when individuals experience mental health emergencies.

The initiative comes amid a growing national focus on mental health care access, particularly in rural areas that face unique challenges such as provider shortages, long travel distances for care, and stigma associated with seeking mental health support. In many rural communities, first responders and hospital emergency departments are often the primary point of contact for individuals in crisis.

Local leaders say the collaboration is designed to ensure individuals receive timely and appropriate care while also supporting first responders with clearer pathways and resources for behavioral health emergencies.

By bringing multiple systems to the same table, Comanche County officials and Iroquois Center service providers hope to build a more effective, compassionate, and sustainable crisis response system—one that reflects both national best practices and the realities of rural Kansas.
