Have you ever taken a nap and slept way harder than you wanted to? And then for the rest of the day you feel like you are trying to get out of a fog? This is what a newborn experiences shortly after being born.

A lot of times you will find that the first feeding right after delivery your baby does really great and then after that they seem to hit a major decline. Well, think of it like this….It’s almost like after delivery, your baby gets a surge of adrenaline, they’re excited to experience this new world they just entered into, and then out of nowhere, the birthing experience hits, and they realize just how tired they actually are. They just went through a lot!

It takes a newborn about 24-48 hours to get out of this sleepy fog. They will come in and out of it to eat occasionally, but you may find it really difficult to get them awake and also difficult to keep them awake once they are at the breast.

So what do you do in the meantime? Well, the first thing I would recommend would be to do lots of skin to skin with your baby! You CANNOT do this too much. This keeps them close to the kitchen and being close to you also helps them conserve energy so they won’t be quite so sleepy (more on this tomorrow!)

The next thing is SUPER important….you need to start “talking” to your body! In order for the milk making to really get kick started, your breasts need stimulation and milk removal. If your baby is not doing this quite yet you will be doing your milk supply a HUGE favor by stimulating your breasts frequently. The more frequently you stimulate and remove some of that nutrient rich colostrum, the more your body starts to make. And if you can give your baby a little extra colostrum, that’s a big bonus as well!

The easiest and most efficient way to do this would be with hand expression, something you can ask your nurse or the hospital lactation consultant to teach you!

So for those of you mammas who have been through this already, what was your experience with the sleepy baby fog??

Skin to skin is basically like a super power! There are so many benefits for your baby when you practice this often! Let’s dive in…

Let’s start with the obvious….skin to skin is incredible for bonding between both you and your baby. As much as you love it, your baby probably is enjoying it even more! It is as close to home as they can get. Being able to smell you and hear your heart beat are all things that are both familiar and comforting to them. After they are born, they are exposed to lots of touch, sounds, light, all things that are fine, but it can be a lot for a newborn when they are used to being in the warm dark environment of the womb.

It keeps them close to the kitchen! I don’t know about you, but when my mom is making something delicious in her kitchen, it only makes me want to eat! 😋 And babies have an incredible sense of smell. They learn quick where the food is. Being skin to skin with mom helps them to be more enticed with eating when they are in that sleepy fog.

Skin to skin also has incredible health benefits for your newborn! It helps regulate their heart rate, respirations, body temperature, and blood sugars! By being on your chest, you are helping to regulate all of these things so they don’t have to work quite as hard to do it themselves. This helps them conserve energy (calories), which in turn, helps them have more energy to eat! Win-win!

This is just the beginning of all of the helpful things that your newborn can benefit from doing skin to skin. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are spoiling your baby by holding them too much (huge pet peeve)! Being with you (and dad) is exactly what they need and where they want to be!

So go ahead, get in all those cuddles! 😊

This week I will be talking about some common things that I hear from moms 1-2 days post delivery.

The first 24-48 hours of newborn life things can be a bit deceiving. Whether that’s because of what you perceive or because of what you have heard from others, it can be so helpful to have a realistic idea of what to expect those first few days!

Stay tuned!

First, through Lactation Link, you can take prenatal education courses!
~
As a postpartum nurse, I noticed a night and day difference from the moms who had previous breastfeeding education than the ones that didn’t. There’s something about even knowing a tiny bit of what to expect, that allows a mom to be so much calmer in those beginning stages of feeding.

I cannot recommend enough giving yourself some pre-baby breastfeeding education! Follow the link in my profile for more information!

Hey friends! I’m Margaret, RN, IBCLC, and mom of 2. I worked as a postpartum nurse for 6 years, doing this led me to discover my passion for helping families breastfeed their littles. I myself, had many challenges with my own breastfeeding journey. So, when I say I know how you feel, I truly know how you feel! My desire is to come alongside you and your family to provide knowledge and to help you accomplish your own individual feeding goals, whatever that may be! I’m here with you momma….let me know how I can serve you and your family!
