Patanjali said “Undisturbed calmness of mind is attained by cultivating friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and indifference toward the wicked.” In tumultuous times, people begin to break at their weak points and behave in ways that harm. Sometimes that harm is intentional but mostly it is caused by the ripple of energy and action radiating from our choices. This is karma. We are all being pressed, maybe even crushed under the weight of life’s difficulties. We have to make a choice each day, each hour, each minute about how to move through the world and sometimes we have to move with an incredible, invisible weight on our backs but those times are the true test of our progress. I see the suffering of others and I experience it myself. I pray for everyone to be free from it, but there is no cure unfortunately. The closest we come to removing our own suffering is to acknowledge the suffering of others when they behave in a harmful way and give grace when our instinct may be to get angry or turn away. I choose love and compassion every time, especially when it’s hard to do. That’s the only way to help shoulder the weight for others and the only way they can do it for us. Whatever is heavy on your heart today, give it a slow, deep breath and honor it. Accept it as part of your story and then open your eyes to something else. Maybe take a look at the mountains, the sunset, a sleeping child, the roof over your head and know that in this moment you have a choice to calm your mind. Be grateful, compassionate, accepting and happy for others. Don’t allow someone else to disturb your peace. It’s too precious. Don’t speak harsh words about others because we are all interconnected and everything we put out into the world permeates the collective. Thank whoever you pray to for giving you another day to collect scars and bruises and belly laughs and hugs. That’s the whole point. Just be loving and peaceful as much as you can. ✌🏼❤️
