Stay Safe During Extreme Heat!

When temps soar, heat can become dangerous, especially for kids, seniors, and pets. Here’s how to protect yourself and your loved ones:

Slow Down: Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
Dress Smart: Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothes.
Eat Light: Go for fruits, veggies, and easy-to-digest foods.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water (not too cold). Avoid alcohol & caffeine.
Stay Cool: Use A/C or visit public places like malls or libraries.
Use Fans: They help circulate air but won’t cool you if it’s over 90°F.
Cool Down: Take a cool bath or shower.
No Salt Tablets: Only take if prescribed.
Limit Sun: Minimize direct exposure & protect your skin.
Watch Out: Never leave babies, seniors, or pets in cars, even for a minute.

Know the Heat Index: If it’s 95°F with 50% humidity, it feels like 105°F!

Heat Safety Tips for the Summertime (Department of Public Health):

Heat Safety is essential, especially during hot weather or in settings where individuals are exposed to high temperatures, such as during outdoor work, sports or emergencies. Here’s a concise guide for preventing, recognizing and responding to heat-related illnesses.

Prevention Tips
1. Hydration
• Drink water regularly — before feeling thirsty.
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks in high heat.
• Use electrolyte solutions during prolonged activity.

2. Acclimatization
• Gradually increase exposure to heat over 7-14 days.
• Especially important for workers or athletes in hot environments.

3. Clothing and gear
• Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
• Use hats and sunscreen to reduce sun exposure.
• Limit use of heavy protective equipment during peak heat, if possible.

4. Work/rest cycles
• Schedule strenuous activities during cooler parts of the day.
• Implement regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

5. Monitor vulnerable populations
• Children, older adults and individuals with chronic illnesses are at higher risk.
• Ensure they have access to cool spaces and hydration.
