🎉🎉Milestone moment!

Our Mobile Mammography Unit has officially reached 10,000 miles on the road! From Jackman to Windham, Unity to Greenville, and other communities in between, Mobile Mammography has brought lifesaving screening directly to approximately 850 patients. Time and again, Jane Hibbard-Merrill and Charlie Merrill have stepped forward to enhance cancer care in Piscataquis County. Now, they are being recognized statewide for their generosity.

Recently, Northern Light Health presented the 2025 True North Philanthropy Award to Jane and Charlie. The award recognizes their incredible support, including making a memorial gift to establish the Tracy Hibbard Kasprzak Cancer Treatment Center at Northern Light Mayo Hospital, purchasing four heated massage infusion treatment chairs, and inspiring and becoming the founding sponsor of Walk for Hope, our region's largest cancer fundraiser.

We are deeply grateful to Jane and Charlie for their commitment to cancer care—their kindness lights the way forward for patients and families and will make a lasting difference years to come.

Snowboarding is an exciting winter sport, but it comes with increased risks to foot and ankle injuries over skiing. In fact, ankle sprains and fractures are the most frequent injury in snowboarding. Understanding these risks and how to prevent them can help you enjoy the slopes safely.

Joshua Mayich, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot & ankle and trauma care at Northern Light Orthopedics in Presque Isle, tells us that this thrilling and healthy sport can be enjoyed safely with the right preparation and precautions. By wearing protective gear, building your strength and balance, choosing appropriate terrain for your skill level, and seeking prompt medical care when injured, you can significantly reduce your risk of foot and ankle injuries and spend more time enjoying the mountain.

🤒The flu can knock you off your feet, but the best medicine usually starts at home.

Rest, drink fluids, and stay home to recover, but keep an eye on your symptoms. If symptoms become severe or don't improve, seek care.

Taking care of yourself helps take care of everyone. đź’™

Whether you are just shoveling snow from your doorstep or tackling your entire driveway, you could end of with an injury this winter. To help avoid that, we’ve asked Rachel Emery, a physical therapist at Northern Light Rehabilitation, to share some shoveling tips.

• Start with a warm-up. Cold muscles can strain more easily. Consider shoulder rolls, neck rolls, and marching in place.

• Choose the right shovel for you. It should be long enough so when you push it your knees are slightly bent, and your trunk is pitched forward just slightly. Your shovel blade should be light and small as to avoid overloading.

• Keep a wide stance, and wear boots that grip. When you hold the shovel, your hands should be at least 12 inches apart.

• To avoid twisting, step in the direction you want to toss the snow and toss it forward/lift the shovel with your legs. Or push the snow forward.

• Stand up periodically to relieve pressure from your low back.

• Take it slow and break up the work into manageable chunks. If you can't say a full sentence, you are working too hard.

• Stop immediately if you have signs of a heart attack, such as dizziness or chest tightness.

Our team in Northern Light Rehabilitation wishes you safe shoveling this winter season!

While today is normally a day where people would ditch their New Year’s resolutions, we wanted to take time to let you know that it’s okay if you aren’t on track with your resolutions but still want to succeed.

Look at your goals you’ve set. Is there a way to make some slight adjustments to achieve that first step? “We constantly set goals for ourselves that we feel we easily should be able to achieve, but our skills vary day to day which influences our behavior. Looking at this with goal setting can really make a positive impact,” says Angela Haley, LCPC, CCS, clinical manager of inpatient services at Northern Light Acadia Hospital.

For example, let’s say you drink three cups of coffee a day, and want to get down to one cup a day. Instead of trying to get down to one cup immediately, maybe try only drinking two cups for a day. Then drop it down to one in a couple of weeks. This small change help makes your goal more achievable.

If you also need a cheat day, take it. Have a day of fun and then get back on track the next day.
