Ear infections are common in school-age children, but not all ear infections are the same.

1) Otitis media (middle ear infection): This occurs behind the eardrum, often following a cold or upper respiratory infection. Symptoms can include ear pain, fever, irritability, or trouble hearing. Some cases improve on their own, but antibiotics may be needed if symptoms are severe or persistent.

2) Otitis externa (outer ear infection or “swimmer’s ear”): This affects the ear canal, often after swimming or water exposure. Symptoms include ear pain when the ear is touched, redness, itching, and sometimes discharge. Treatment typically involves ear drops rather than oral antibiotics.

Understanding the type of infection helps guide proper treatment and prevent complications.

Call our office if your child shows signs of an ear infection so we can determine the type and provide the right care.

Family history can play a role in a child's mental health, but it's important to remember that genes are not destiny. While a genetic predisposition might increase vulnerability, it's only one piece of a much larger puzzle.

Some mental health conditions that tend to run in families include:

• Anxiety disorders
• Depression
• ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
• Autism spectrum disorder
• Bipolar disorder
• Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Knowing your family history simply empowers you to notice early signs and talk openly about feelings. It helps reduce stigma and encourages proactive support.

If you have concerns about your family's history or notice changes in your child, we're here to help you navigate it all. Schedule a visit to talk with our team. ❤️

The holidays can bring excitement, stress, or disappointment for children.

Changes in routine - like later bedtimes, new schedules, or extra activities - can also cause stress and lead to behavior changes. Encourage children to express feelings with words, take calming breaks, and participate in planning to feel more in control.

Modeling healthy coping strategies helps children learn to manage emotions effectively.

If your child struggles with big emotions or behavior during the holidays, call our office for support and resources.

Energy drinks can seem like a quick fix for tired teens, but the high levels of caffeine and sugar can negatively impact their growing bodies and minds. Before they reach for another can, let's talk about some healthier ways to boost energy.

Here are a few practical swaps to try:

• Water with a splash of electrolytes for sports.
• A glass of milk or a fortified alternative.
• Balanced snacks like an apple with peanut butter.
• A warm, comforting cup of herbal or green tea.
• Prioritizing a consistent sleep schedule.
• Taking short breaks for movement and sunlight.

Encourage them to read labels and be aware of hidden stimulants, especially in "pre-workout" drinks. A little caffeine might be okay for older teens, but it's important to know the limits.

If you have questions about caffeine safety or healthy energy boosters, we're here to help.

Schedule a visit to chat about what's right for your child. ☀️

Some often-overlooked symptoms can include:
• Increased irritability or anger
• Frequent physical complaints like headaches or stomachaches
• Significant changes in sleep patterns (too much or too little)
• Withdrawing from friends or favorite activities
• A sudden drop in grades or trouble focusing
• Changes in eating habits

Symptoms can look different depending on your child's age. If you notice these changes, remember it’s not anyone’s fault, and early support makes a world of difference.

Wondering about vitamins will help support your child through cold and flu season? We get it. While a balanced diet and ample sleep are always best, some nutrients can give an extra boost. 🍊

Here's what can help keep their immune systems strong:

Vitamin D: Essential for immune health, especially in winter.
Vitamin C: Focus on food sources like oranges and berries first.
Zinc: Supports immune function, but make sure the dose is age-appropriate.
Probiotics: Can help with gut health, which is tied to immunity.
Omega-3s: Great for overall wellness.

Remember, more isn't always better. Avoid megadoses and always check with your pediatrician before starting any new supplement, especially iron.

If you have questions about what's right for your child, we're here to help with personalized advice. Schedule a visit with us today!

Picky eating is common in toddlers and usually part of normal development. Encouraging variety can take patience: offer new foods alongside familiar favorites, involve your child in meal prep, and model healthy eating yourself. Avoid pressure or punishment—positive exposure over time is more effective than forcing a bite.

Provider Tip: Dr. Morgan recommends offering only a tiny, bite-sized piece when introducing a new food - or if your child didn’t like it the last time. Toddlers are visual eaters, so if a food looks unfamiliar or intimidating, they’re less likely to try it.

Need strategies tailored to your picky eater? Call our office for guidance and practical tips to make mealtime less stressful.
