Colon cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in North Carolina, but you are not defenseless. Screening can prevent many colon cancer deaths.

Starting at age 45, it’s important to get screened. Your risk is higher if you have a family history of colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Lifestyle factors—such as diet, physical activity, alcohol use, and smoking—also play a role.

Scheduling a colonoscopy gives you an advantage. It helps doctors find potential problems early, when they are more treatable.

Through ECU Health’s Tele-ICU program, patients and families have more flexibility in where they receive care — reducing the need to travel or transfer. About 90 percent of Tele-ICU consultations do not require a transfer, allowing many patients to remain close to home while receiving the care they need.
