The James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital at ECU Health Medical Center is a special place where sick or injured children and their families find healing and support in a state-of-the-art environment. It is part of ECU Health Medical Center, the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and tertiary care center for 1.4 million people living in ECU Health’s 29-county service area. In addition to Maynard Children’s Hospital outpatient volumes, the ECU Health pediatric outpatient center receives nearly 60,000 patient visits annually, which includes general pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties. Maynard Children’s Hospital and the Brody School of Medicine are members of the Children’s Hospital Association, National Children’s Study, and the Children’s Oncology Group, which enables us to compare the care we provide to other children’s hospitals across the country. The promise to ensure the best possible future for children in eastern North Carolina drove the creation of this 78,000-square-foot addition offering additional pediatric services. A key focus in the design of this project was to provide an environment conducive to patient- and family-centered care. This philosophy reflects the staff’s commitment to providing care that is tailored to the needs of children. It has been a guiding force behind pediatric care at ECU Health Medical Center for many years. TERMS OF USE

With over-the-counter medication and proper hydration, most measles cases can be managed at home, with only a small number requiring immediate medical care.

Just 4 days before his second birthday, Preston was admitted for suspicion of leukemia to undergo numerous procedures to confirm his diagnosis. He spent his 2nd birthday and Halloween in the hospital receiving chemotherapy. A year into treatment, Preston became critically ill requiring admission for over a month, being cared for in the intensive care unit and on ECMO during a portion of that stay. During that hospitalization, he celebrated another birthday and Halloween in the hospital. Following his amazing recovery, Preston has spent the last year completing treatment for leukemia. Throughout all of these tribulations, this Bluey and trucks loving boy has shared his sweet smile. Alongside his parents and sisters, Preston rang the end of treatment bell in honor of this great accomplishment.

When Amber Alsad was pregnant with her son, Myles, she already knew he would need surgeries and care at the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital at ECU Health Medical Center.

Her water broke at 37 weeks and Myles was delivered by C-section the next morning. “There were so many people ready for his arrival in that OR room, and thankfully so, because he required two resuscitations and oxygen,” Amber said. “I can never thank them enough for saving his life.”

Myles spent 44 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and underwent three surgeries before coming home. Now 2 years old, he has had seven surgeries and countless hospital days. Through it all, Amber says the team made the difference.

“His NICU stay was hard, but the nurses and doctors there made it better. I don’t know what we would have done without such a good team,” Amber said. “The nurses have always been so amazing with him—he laughs, plays and talks to them all. It isn’t scary for him. It’s welcoming.”
Amber says the hospital will always hold a special place in her family’s heart.

We love hearing about the meaningful impact the care teams at Maynard Children’s Hospital have on the families we serve—and if you have one of your own, we’d love to hear from you. Share yours today at gratitude@ecuhealth.org.

Fighting cancer for the third time, Carlos continues to show up with kindness and a sense of humor that lights up the entire unit. When he learned his cancer had returned, he told everyone he would “beat it again.”

Even on the hardest days, he faces each moment with remarkable bravery. After counting down the days, and even the hours, his Little Wish finally arrived.

With his new PlayStation gear, Carlos now has a way to keep playing through both the good days and the hard ones, with the Maynard Children’s Hospital team behind him, cheering him on.

Dedicated Space to Support Our Youngest Patients

When we opened our doors in 2013, we made a promise to the 29 counties we serve across eastern North Carolina — to ensure the best possible future for our children. Child-focused, family-centered care for our youngest patients is how we deliver on that promise.

Designed to ease young minds

Every inch of our 78,000-square-foot facility was designed with children’s needs in mind. Beyond the shape of the building itself and the ocean theme throughout, the following features are just a few of the innovative ways we help reduce children’s anxieties and keep families close together:
