Public meltdowns can be stressful for both children and parents—but with the right strategies, you can navigate them calmly and effectively.

Here are 3 simple ABA-based strategies to help your child and keep everyone safe:

1️⃣ Stay Calm & Model Regulation – Your child often mirrors your emotional state. Take deep breaths, lower your voice, and use calm body language to help them feel safe.

2️⃣ Use Visual or Verbal Supports – A visual cue card, countdown timer, or simple words like “stop” or “wait” can help your child understand expectations and regain control.

3️⃣ Reinforce Positive Coping – When your child uses a coping skill, praises them immediately. Even small efforts—like taking a deep breath or moving to a quiet space—should be recognized. Positive reinforcement makes these skills stick!

💡 Extra Tip: Have a “go bag” ready with favorite sensory toys, headphones, or a small snack for situations that might trigger meltdowns. Being prepared reduces stress for everyone.

With practice, patience, and ABA strategies, your child can learn to manage big emotions in public spaces.

Ever wonder if it’s a meltdown or a tantrum?

They may look similar—but they’re very different. A tantrum is about wanting. A meltdown is about overwhelm.

If your child is overstimulated, unable to calm down, and not responding to rewards or consequences—it’s likely emotional overload, not misbehavior.

✨ A tantrum
• Happens when a child wants something
• Often stops when the goal is met
• The child has some control

✨ A meltdown
• Happens when the nervous system is overwhelmed
• Not about attention or getting something
• The child is not in control and needs support, not discipline

Common signs of emotional overload:
• Covering ears or eyes
• Screaming or crying suddenly
• Running away or shutting down
• Hitting, dropping to the floor, or freezing

Support, patience, and understanding make all the difference.

You may hear terms like Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 autism—but what do they actually mean?

These levels don’t define your child. They simply describe how much support someone may need.

✨ Level 1: Needs some support. May struggle with social situations or changes in routine, but can be more independent.
✨ Level 2: Needs substantial support. Challenges with communication, flexibility, and daily routines are more noticeable.
✨ Level 3: Needs very substantial support. Significant challenges with communication and daily functioning and often requires ongoing support.

Every child is unique. Autism is a spectrum, and no two journeys look the same.

If you have questions or concerns, you’re not alone—and support can make a meaningful difference. 💙
