Our culture normalizes appearance based comments. People often think they are harmless and even “positive.” Someone may even believe they like receiving these comments because they’ve been conditioned to think so. The reason these comments aren’t positive or neutral is they reinforce that someone’s value is based on how they look. They also could be reinforcing someone’s eating disorder.

What if we start reinforcing what we really value in one another?

For example, rather than commenting ‘you look so good!’ perhaps you can shift to:
•It’s so good to see you! I’ve missed spending time with you!”
•I’ve been looking forward to connecting
•I’ve wanted to hear about your trip/new job/puppy.”
•It’s always so great to have time together

When commenting on a picture/post consider focusing on the emotions such as:
•”You all look so happy. I can feel the joy!’
• “It looks like you’re having so much fun!”
• “So glad you could spend the holiday with your family/friends/etc”

Let’s start reinforcing the parts of people and experiences that really MATTER. We dont value people for their bodies/appearance. Diet culture does and this has led to body based/appearance based comments being normalized. Lets remind eachother that what we value in each other is so much more than our bodies.

*and of course you can compliment someone’s outfit,
hair, jewelry etc but perhaps you can also relate this to them more:
•”I love your sweater. The color is beautiful. Is it comfortable?”
•”Love your outfit. You’ve got great style.”

Long post ahead ⚠️

Let’s talk about the recent RFK announcement claiming that there is a ‘strong association’ between prenatal exposure to acetaminophen and the development of neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, Autism, NDD) NOT. SO. FAST.

Would you like to hear about the research they conducted? Well, they didn’t conduct any. They searched PubMed, a research database, in Feb 2025 and found 46 studies that already existed to explore associations between acetaminophen and neurodevelopmental disorders. This is a called a meta-analysis. They claim that 27 of the studies showed a positive association, while 13 other studies did not. 9 showed no association and 4 indicated a negative association. Only 6 of the studies looked specifically at Autism.

After analyzing these 46 studies, they are claiming that there is evidence that prenatal use of Tylenol increases the risk of a neurodevelopmental disorder. This narrative is compelling to people who want answers however there is a HUGE missing piece of the story: genetics. There is no indication that these studies have a ‘genetic control’. What we know is the biggest factor leading to the development of ADHD, ASD and NDDs is GENETICS. Until we know the genetic risk (mom’s genetics; dad’s genetics), we can’t theorize on the effect of the medication.

The only semblance of a genetic control used in the meta-analysis were studies looking at siblings. When they looked at the impact of exposure to Tylenol among siblings….they found NO association. The authors seem to have minimized these findings claiming they were too small of sample sizes and there were other ‘control issues.’ Perhaps one of those control issues was genetics 😎

SO, thank you RFK for reiterating what we DO know: GENETICS ARE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FACTOR in the development of ADHD, Autism and NDDs. Please speak with your doctor if you have concerns about Tylenol use during pregnancy.

Exciting announcement! In the practice of psychology, clinicians are licensed PER STATE. State licensure protects both the client and clinician through the establishment of specific ethical guidelines and mental health laws This ensures quality control of clinicians as the state oversees their license to make sure they meet the necessary standards.

While I’m a BIG advocate of ethical practice and license regulations, its incredibly hard to be aware of the need for specialized ed care and be aware of the limitations many face in accessing care. Virtual services have increased access to care and so has PSYPACT legislation.

For licensed clinical psychologists licensed in PSYPACT states, this legislation has granted us ethical/legal access to provide interjurisdictional care in 26+ states currently. More states are joining regularly! This means within participating states, clinicians licensed under PSYPACT can provide telehealth services across state lines!!!! Its so incredibly exciting and I’m so thrilled to be a part of this progressive step in the practice of psychology

Whether it’s on Instagram, in your real life, or via other mediums….people seem to believe that it’s appropriate to comment on what other people are eating. These comments likely stem from their own judgments/biases and what they’ve internalized from all together now… “DIET CULTURE!”

Nobody outside of you knows what you need (this applies to ALL of your needs). Hunger cannot be seen. Fullness cannot be seen. What satisfies you cannot be seen. Other people’s comments only serve to erode your trust with yourself. They lend themselves to self doubt, moralization, guilt and shame.

If you are reading this and comment on others eating choices/behaviors, take a moment to be curious…where does this stem from for you? What would it be like to practice refraining from these comments?

Disclaimer: if you are in recovery from an eating disorder or disordered eating, your dietitian and therapist are likely working with you to guide you back to your intuition. In the beginning stages of your journey, nutrition will likely be more prescriptive. It won’t be this way forever. You will rebuild trust with time and practice.

For all parents who may be reading, you can serve the role of helping your child become an intuitive eater OR you can police/seek to control their eating. Naturally there is nuance (nothing is so all/nothing), but I want to amplify your ability to be such a beautiful guide and resource for your child in helping them reject the diet mentality, learn all foods are good foods, and help them to tune into their unique needs.

In pop culture news, it appears as though Khloe Kardashian is arduously trying to have an unaltered image of herself removed from the interwebs. Per my sources (questionable news rags), her grandmother took a photo of her and her assistant posted it ‘accidentally.’ Grandma, did NOT use filters or photoshop apps, she did not attempt to ‘get the lighting right’, she did not focus on angles or poses. Rather she took a photo of her granddaughter. Scandalous, I know.

This image apparently is significantly different from other images on Khloe’s social media as her images tend to be highly altered, filtered, photoshopped, and tuned. Khloe’s outrage by this event is due to the UNREALISTIC BEAUTY STANDARDS placed on humans. The irony is she is both impacted by these standards and she is perpetuating these standards. She is both feeling oppressed and oppressing others. I have so much compassion for her as she is in the spotlight, others think they have the right to comment on her body, she has experienced constant critique and she has been consistently compared to her sisters throughout her life.

Its clear her own insecurities and struggles are influencing how she uses her social media. She wants to present a certain image to the public to protect herself, however, there is SO MUCH HARM BEING DONE by doing this.

Let us take this as an opportunity to acknowledge that IMAGES ON SOCIAL MEDIA ARE IMAGES. People captured in a millisecond. In a frame. At one angle. In one light. Images are not whole humans. Images are one dimensional. We are not one dimensional.

YOU ARE NOT AN IMAGE
YOU ARE NOT A PHOTO
YOU ARE A LIVING, BREATHING, DIMENSIONAL HUMAN.

Justice for wrinkles, lines, pores (remember when people had pores?!), fat, fat rolls, blemishes, and all imperfections. We are all imperfect and thats what makes us human.

When you see an image of someone else on social media, please know the difference between an IMAGE and a PERSON

SUPER EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!!!

Over the past year, we have all experienced the world and our lives ‘shut down.’ We lacked access to vital resources.

Fortunately, in the world of therapy, sessions could relatively seamlessly transition to a virtual platform. This actually seemed to allow for greater access to services.

Accessibility really became a theme this past year. As a result, I decided to move my practice in an untraditional direction.

For the past year, I have been renovating a mobile office and today ‘she’ is ready for her introduction. Starting this month, Evolve Psychotherapy, will be including a mobile office that can bring services to YOU. The hope is that this circumvents any additional barriers to care. After the year we’ve had, it seems symbolic.

APRIL FOOLS!!!!!!! Who got fooled???

After scouring IG for these images, I am AMAZED by these renovations!!! The interior images are the incredible . The exterior shot is also and the Reno shots are

The “sick enough” argument is one that confounds me. It arises consistently with those who struggle with disordered eating and eating disorders. What does this mean?! Where does it come from? How come sickness has to be qualified?!

Tw: discussion of cancer (I put a trigger warning as I realize many people have been impacted by this disease and it may be challenging to read)

An analogy I find helpful to consider is likening eating disorders (a severe medical and psychological illness) to cancer (a severe medical illness). This comparison is rooted in the fact that collectively we seem to understand the SEVERITY of cancer while there collectively seems to be a lack of understanding about the SEVERITY of eating disorders. We have been taught and accept how devastating cancer can be. It’s a disease that we don’t have a full understanding of how it develops however we are aware of risk factors. Similarly, the specific complex mechanisms at play that lead to the development of an eating disorder are unclear while we are aware of risk factors that lead to the development of an eating disorder. Both cancer and eating disorders are diseases that are deadly. No one chooses to develop cancer or an eating disorder. Rather both diseases stem from a combination of genetic, biological, environmental and other factors outside of ones control. When we take this analogy a step further we recognize the VALUE of early detection. Early detection and screening is promoted in the cancer field. It’s also promoted in the eating disorder field however this does not extend to the general public. When it comes to cancer, the mentality “oh, it’s just stage 1, I’m not sick enough to seek treatment” does NOT exist. Instead seeking care early IS INDICATED. Preventing the illness from progressing leads to the best prognosis. This is the same with eating disorders. You do not have to wait until you are at your “sickest” to seek care. You do not have to meet arbitrary qualifications to seek care.

Often times being “ sick enough” is equated with being “thin enough”. Clients who are severely sick are invalidating their illness by telling themselves this “I’m not thin enough to be sick.” FALSE. Underweight is a symptom of an eating disorder that has been perpetuated by the media and stereotypes. Most people do not present with underweight.

Just like you do not have to wait until cancer progresses to stage 4 to warrant care, you do not have to decompensate to your sickest when struggling with an eating disorder

If you are struggling in any capacity with your relationship with food, exercise or your body, you are sick enough to seek care

Happy valentines day to all! May this day mean for you what you want it to mean. You get to decide.

Perhaps you have a designated “valentine.” Perhaps you don’t. This has no bearing on your value as a human. Don’t get caught up in social comparison or marketing tactics.

LOVE TO ALL
