It’s National Nurse Practitioner (NP) Week, and we are honored to celebrate our clinics’ nurse practitioners (NPs and FNPs), who provide comprehensive and compassionate care to countless numbers of family medicine patients each year. 🩺🏥

NPs evaluate patients, order and interpret tests, make diagnoses, write prescriptions and bring a comprehensive perspective to health care. Thank you for being a valued member of our clinics and care teams!

Next up in the series is Devin Cregan, DO! When asked why he picked ECU Family Medicine, Dr. Cregan said, "Growing up in eastern NC, I knew that ECU has an excellent hospital that is always growing and improving. I've always wanted to come back to eastern NC to practice and having the opportunity do residency out here made it an easy choice."

Our next is on Ghada Bedwan, DO! Dr. Bedwan spent a rotation here at ECU Family Medicine as an Acting Intern, and chose to do residency here because she "had such a great month and felt like I got along well with the residents, and could sense a cohesiveness among the residents and faculty as a whole. Additionally, I noticed that a lot of the family medicine program administrators, attending and faculty had been here either for undergrad, med school or residency, or all of the above, and were still here till now, which showed to me that ECU wants to keep its people and that they’re good enough to be kept here, as well as those individuals wanting to stay here."

The second Saturday in October each year marks World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. We would like to honor the incredible work of our own hospice, palliative, and geriatric care teams at ECU Family Medicine. These services provide comfort, dignity, and support to patients and families facing serious illness.
We also celebrate our Fellowship programs, which train future leaders in compassionate, patient-centered care.

Congratulations to our very own, Shiv Patil, MD, MPH, BC-ADM, FAAFP, Director of Research & Education at ECU Family Medicine, on being approved for a new research grant in collaboration with East Carolina Diabetes & Obesity Institute!

GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors are approved for type 2 diabetes, but which works better to prevent catastrophic cardiovascular and kidney events? That’s what Dr. Shiv Patil (PI), Family Medicine, and Dr. Beatriz Ramirez (Co-I), Endocrinology, want to know. They were approved for a research grant from Brigham and Women's Hospital to lead the East Carolina University site for the PCORI-funded PRECIDENTD study. A collab w/ East Carolina Diabetes & Obesity Institute.
