The Moberg flap is an innervated, pedicled flap that utilizes the palmar thumb's unique blood supply to reconstruct soft tissue defects. It provides a sensate and well-padded flap to the thumb tip while preserving length and excellent cosmesis. I recently saw a patient for an unrelated issue whom I had done a Moberg flap on for a partial thumb amputation table saw injury 3 years prior. I will spare the graphic preop injury images, but so rewarding to see his outcome of a normal looking and feeling thumb years later.

Treating recurrent Dupuytren's contractures after surgery remains a challenge. I am proud to have contributed to a multicenter study that demonstrated collagenase is safe and effective in treating recurrent contractures. In this series of 144 affected finger joints with contracture recurrence after surgery, there was a mean 38 degree improvement in contracture after collagenase treatment with minimal adverse events. In contrast, revision surgery typically means a more lengthy recovery and potentially greater risk of adverse events. I was honored to be a speaker at the International Conference on Dupuytren Disease in Brussels, May 16-17 where I discussed the role of collagenase and the problem of contracture recurrence. I learned about new findings on genetics, cellular biology and evolving treatments from speakers from Europe, Australia and the US. These presenters spoke about the role for humira in early disease, radiation therapy and innovative surgical techniques. Thanks to Dr. DeGreef for hosting a great meeting!

I am excited to have performed the first ten endoscopic carpal tunnel releases with the newly released VECTR device by Rafael Medical Devices. The VECTR is an all-in-one peel pack system that allows a surgeon to efficiently and safely perform endoscopic carpal tunnel release in a very small footprint without bulky arthroscopy equipment or need to sterilize equipment. This will allow surgeons to reduce turnover times and sterilization costs at ASCs and even enhance the ability to perform this surgery under WALANT local analgesia in the office setting.

Proud of my coauthors at the ONS Foundation and honored to coauthor this study with one of my mentors who developed this technique, Dr. Bernard Morrey, from the Mayo Clinic. Intrabursal injection of doxycyline was a safe and effective alternative to surgical treatment for olecranon bursitis refractory to conservative management.

On Saturday, Greenwich Hospital welcomed Dr. Charlie Eaton, one of the world’s experts on Dupuytren’s Disease of the hand and the surgeon who brought needle fasciotomy to the US. He presented a seminar on the challenges of treating this condition and his work with the Dupuytren Research Group to accelerate the quest for a cure. Thank you, Dr. Eaton, for sharing your wisdom.
