A recent editorial by The Denver Post about hospitals profits overlooks the vital work that hospitals are doing to preserve access to care and oversimplifies hospital finances.

In a response, Jeff Tieman, CHA president and CEO notes: "CHA’s Q2 2025 Colorado Hospital Update shows that nearly 70% of hospitals have unsustainable margins, meaning most cannot absorb additional financial burdens without cutting services or staff. Rural hospitals face even greater strain, with more than 80% operating with minimal or no margins. We share the goal of supporting patients, but solutions must reflect the full financial realities facing hospitals, or we risk reducing access to care for the very communities we aim to protect."

Here for Our Patients: Children’s Hospital Colorado has completed the region’s first pediatric heart–liver transplant. The rare procedure was supported by dozens of team members across 25 different multidisciplinary care teams. Only 38 other pediatric heart and liver dual organ transplants have been completed in the United States.

Children's Colorado performed the region's first-ever pediatric heart and liver dual organ transplant, which has only been done 38 times in the U.S.

As part of the federal funding bill (H.R. 1), Congress created the Rural Health Transformation Program (RFTP) to help sustain rural health care across the country. Colorado has submitted an application for part of this funding, but unfortunately Colorado's rural hospitals' recommendations were disregarded during the application development. CHA and our hospitals are asking for help from Colorado legislators to make sure any funding our state receives reflects the needs of the communities it is meant to support. Here for Our Patients: A recent ranking by U.S. News & World Report named 15 Colorado hospitals among the nation’s best for maternity care! Congratulations to these hospitals and their dedicated teams for earning this recognition. Their inclusion reflects rigorous metrics: lower intervention rates, fewer newborn complications, and adoption of birthing-friendly practices statewide:

More than a dozen local hospitals landed on U.S. News & World Report's 2026 list of the nation's best places to give birth.
