🔹 TMS vs. ECT — What’s the Difference?
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) and ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) are both used to treat depression—but they are fundamentally different treatments.
TMS (Modern, Targeted Therapy):
✔️ Uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific brain regions
✔️ Patient is fully awake and alert
✔️ No anesthesia required
✔️ No induced seizure activity
✔️ Minimal side effects (most commonly mild scalp discomfort)
✔️ No memory loss
✔️ Outpatient—return to normal activity immediately
ECT (More Intensive Intervention):
• Uses electrical currents to intentionally induce a controlled seizure
• Requires anesthesia and medical monitoring
• Typically used for severe or treatment-resistant cases (e.g., suicidality, psychosis)
• Can cause temporary memory loss and cognitive side effects
• Requires recovery time after each session
Bottom line:
TMS is a non-invasive, targeted option designed for patients who want an effective treatment without the systemic effects or intensity of ECT.
