Setting and communicating boundaries is essential for healthy relationships. By showing others how we want to be treated through what we tolerate—and what we won’t—we teach them how to treat us.

Boundaries are acts of self-compassion. When we make values-based decisions and take care of ourselves, we create the experiences we want. Saying “no” is powerful: it can protect us from unnecessary pain and suffering. Not everyone will like us, and that’s okay. We can’t be all things to all people, including family and friends.

Clear limits matter for all healthy relationships. Boundary-setting isn’t selfish—it’s how we honor ourselves and build respect.
